Professor BH Neumann AC FAA FRS (1909-2002) Professor Bernhard Neumann, a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, celebrated his 90th birthday on 15 October 1999. He had played a dominant role in mathematics in Australia since his arrival in this country in 1962. An interview with him, taken about the time of this birthday, is available on the Academy's website by clicking here Professor Neumann came to Australia to take up an appointment as the Foundation Chair of the Department of Mathematics within the Institute of Advanced Studies of the Australian National University. He and his late wife Hanna taught and influenced many young people with mathematical talent, at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, and their influence spread downwards into the schools. Hanna was Professor and Head of the Department of Mathematics in the then School of General Studies (now the Faculties) at the ANU, and she was also a Fellow of the Academy. Bernhard Neumann's distinguished contributions to mathematics were many and varied, mostly on the theory of groups. His original work is to be found in over 100 papers, but in addition he is the author of two books and numerous reviews, and he wrote essays about a number of famous mathematicians. In his six-volume series, The Selected Works of B H Neumann and Hanna Neumann, are to be found fascinating commentaries of the life work of Hanna and himself, as well as about the many famous mathematicians and colleagues with whom they've been associated.

BH NEUMANN AWARD FOR Martin Ward
The Board of the Australian Mathematics Trust has announced the awarding of a BH Neumann Award for Senior Lecturer in Mathematics at the ANU Dr Martin Ward. This Award, named in honour of Professor BH Neumann, the father of Australian Mathematics, was presented by Professor Neumann at a function at the ANU on the evening of Tuesday 29 June 1999.
Professor Neumann, Martin Ward and ANU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Deane Terrell at the Award ceremony.
    Citation
With respect to Australian Mathematics Trust activities, Martin Ward mostly comes under notice as a problem creator for the Australian Mathematics Competition Problems Committee. Martin has been a member of this committee over a number of years, including the earliest years 20 years ago. He is responsible for many of the most challenging questions which have appeared in the paper, some of a geometrical nature (including 3 dimensions), others of a graph theory nature, and others algebraic. Whatever, Martin's questions are distinctive for their freshness and the intellectual (but always apparently achievable) challenge which they provide. Martin almost became a chemist, and in fact first completed a chemistry degree at the University of Melbourne. He then decided that he did not wish to spend his life in a laboratory.

    Hanna Neumann
Born: Feb 12, 1914, Berlin, Germany. Died: Nov 14, 1971, Ottawa, Canada Hanna Neumann 's maiden name was Caemmerer. She attended Berlin University and there she was taught analytic and projective geometry by Bieberbach, differential and integral calculus by Schmidt and number theory by Schur. Bieberbach was an inspiring, if unorganised, lecturer and Hanna almost became a geometer. However after the Nazi's came to power in 1933 Hanna became unhappy. She left Berlin University in 1934 to marry Bernhard Neumann, a Jew, so they were forced to leave Germany in 1938, settling in England. Hanna taught at Hull, then UMIST in Manchester until 1963. The year 1961-62 she spent with Bernhard at the Courant Institute (of New York University) in New York. While they were in New York the invitation arrived for both of them to set up mathematics at the Australian National University. In 1963 Hanna and Bernhard went to Australia where she was to spend the rest of her career. In 1971 she undertook a lecture tour of Canada. After lecturing in a number of universities Hanna reached Carleton University, Ottawa. There she took ill and died two days later. Like her husband, Hanna worked in group theory. Her thesis examined free products with amalgamation. Later she worked on varieties of groups and her book

    What's new
This is a sort of catch-all section for all the other results I have relating to dominions in the setting of categories of groups. First let me address another specific class of varieties, and then I will indulge in a bit of more abstractness. Simple Groups As already mentioned, P.M. Neumann proved that no category of solvable groups which is closed under quotients can have nonsurjective epimorphisms. However, if we start with the alternating group on five letters A(5) , then B.H. Neumann proved that in the variety it generates (the collection of all homomorphic images of subgroups of powers of A(5) ), the embedding of A(4) into A(5) is an epimorphism, and trivially nonsurjective. See: Splitting groups and projectives in varieties of groups by P.M. Neumann, Quart. J. Math. Oxford (2), By generalizing B.H. Neumann's argument, one can describe the dominion of a subgroup H of a finite nonabelian simple group S in the variety generated by S . Namely, it is the subgroup fixed by all automorphisms of

    What's new

Aside from the main topic of my thesis and the subjects in which I have obtained results, there are a number of other areas of math (some related, some not) in which I have some interest. In Group Theory, I've been looking lately at the results so far relating to the Hanna Neumann Conjecture. Let me briefly explain what this conjecture is: say we have a free group F . A theorem of Schreier says that every subgroup of F is itself free. Let U and V be finitely generated subgroups of F , of ranks u and v , respectively. A.G. Howson proved that the intersection N of U and V is also finitely generated. See A.G. Howson, On the interesection of finitely generated free groups. J. London Math. Soc. (1954), 428-434. He also provided an upper bound for the rank of N , which I will denote n . A year later, Hanna Neumann ( On the intersection of finitely generated free groups, Publ. Math. Debrecen (1955-1956) 186-189, 'Addendum'

    Bernhard Hermann Neumann
Bernhard Neumann attended school in Berlin at the Herderschule before entering the University of Freiburg to study mathematics in 1928. He studied for his doctorate at the University of Berlin. There he was influenced by an impressive collection of teachers including Schmidt, Robert Remak and Schur. There he met his wife Hanna, also a mathematician. Neumann was awarded his doctorate by the University of Berlin in 1932. When Hitler came to power in 1933, life in Germany became very hard for those of Jewish origin, and Neumann emigrated to England. In England he studied at the University of Cambridge, receiving a Ph.D. from Cambridge in 1935. Even a mathematician as outstanding as Neumann was not guaranteed a lecturing post at that time and he spent 2 years unemployed before being appointed to an assistant lectureship in Cardiff in 1937. In 1940 he joined the Pioneer Corps, then the Royal Artillery, and lastly the Intelligence Corps for the duration of the war. After the war ended, Neumann searched for an academic appointment again, and this time was appointed a lecturer at Hull in 1946. The Neumanns were fortunate in that Hanna Neumann was soon able to join him on the staff as an assistant lecturer. In 1948, Neumann was appointed to the University of Manchester. In1961, Hanna was Neumann accepted an offer from the Australian National University of a professorship and the head of the mathematics department at the Institute of Advanced Studies. He retired in 1974.
