Famous Mathematicians from Underrepresented Groups (Version of 5 March 1998. This web page is still under construction.) Explanation: In our math building is a bulletin board titled "This Week in Mathematics" you can see both a web version of the bulletin board and a more detailed explanation . The bulletin board has several sections: this week's cool math link, this week's birthday, this week's math problem, and our department's calendar for the week. I change the four sheets each week; that's one of my duties as our department's webmaster. I've mostly been taking the biographies from the MacTutor website. They have the biographies of 1100 famous mathematicians from history, indexed alphabetically and also chronologically. That averages around 20 per week, so I follow my own taste in choosing one of those approximately 20 for this week's birthday. I don't always choose the "best mathematician" other criteria enter into my decisions too, such as who has the most interesting biography. The purpose of the bulletin board is to attract the attention of students walking past it, and perhaps lure some of them into mathematics. It recently occurred to me that one of the other purposes is to provide role models. Consequently, it would be a good idea to give additional weight to famous mathematicians from ethnic groups that have been underrepresented in our history books and/or denied opportunities to achieve in the past. For instance, until recently, women were mostly prevented from doing mathematics, so relatively few women have become famous in mathematics. We want to end this sort of discrimination, so those few famous women mathematicians should be publicized; they provide role models and give present-day young women the message that they can become mathematicians too. This speech was given on May 18, 2002 at the dinner banquet of the XXVI-th OSU-Denison Conference honoring Wolfgang Kappe on the occasion of his retirement. "It's a wonderful life" was the title of a talk I gave a month ago at the MAA Seaway Section meeting. Its subtitle: reflections on the career of a mathematician. This time my subtitle is: Reflections on the forty-year career of a husband-and-wife team of mathematicians. Very appropriately so, since we are celebrating our fortieth wedding anniversary in two weeks! Compared to the Neumann's, we were lucky. We had always our jobs at the same university and only had to pull up our stakes once going from Germany to the US, by the way, the same year the Neumann's moved to Australia. But let's start at the beginning: "Once upon a time" Wolfgang and Liselotte met where all mathematicians meet, that mythical place Oberwolfach. By the end of 1959 we both had gravitated to the Black Forest area within a month of each other, Wolfgang as one of the mathematicians in residence in Oberwolfach while writing his dissertation with Reinhold Baer in Frankfurt, and me starting my dissertation with Theodor Schneider in Freiburg. I heard about Wolfgang for the first time when Schneider mentioned that Kappe and Kegel, the two resident assistants in Oberwolfach, are named after two geometric objects, namely the cap of a sphere and the cone. Wolfgang heard about me for the first time from Erich Glock, my future brother-in-law and also a mathematician in residence in Oberwolfach. Once coming back from a visit in Freiburg, Erich reported that Theodor Schneider had brought along "ein Fraeulein Menger". Wolfgang replied as any Berliner would have: " Na und! (= so what!).

The ANU's late Professor Hanna Neumann will be remembered through an Australian Research Council (ARC) award, if a proposal of the Australian Academy of Science is taken up by the ARC. A working committee of the academy's National Commmittee for Mathematics suggests the creation of a two-year Hanna Neumann Postdoctoral Fellowship to "provide a role model for female mathematical scientists" in a report "Mathematical Sciences: Adding to Australia", prepared for the National Board of Employment, Education and Training (NBEET). The report identifies "gender structure" as one of the difficulties facing the discipline. Others include an aging profile of its practitioners. "Given the predominantly masculine teaching staff in mathematical sciences departments," t says, "it is likely that males benefit more than females from the mentoring that is an essential part of academic apprenticeship." But university staff responding to the review did not favour "affirmative action" to redress the balance. "On the other hand, there was general agreement that more could be done to encourage talented female students to continue with their studies, and to retain these students once they were employed."

Recombinant EPO is the most widely used biotechnologically engineered hormone replacement therapy endorsed for use in patients with anemia of diverse etiologies and for the elevation of the red blood cell mass in the treatment of patients prior to autologous blood transfusions . EPO alleviates anemia by imitating the physiological response to anemia and has practical advantages over transfusion. The central role of the EPO-R in hematopoiesis and its possible involvement in pathological states make this system especially important for research. Given the overall similarity among members of the cytokine receptor superfamily, any information regarding EPO-R could be applicable to other cytokine receptors.
