There may have been sibling jealousy (again prompted by the mothers) and, as Hubert would never have been Duke of Normandy (whoever won the battle) he may have decided to ensure that his sibling rival, Walderne, didn't get it..... so he supported 'the Bastard'. If the Battle of Val-es-Dunes had swung the other way (and it was a closely run thing) the Sinclairs would have become the Royal Family of England and eventually of quarter of the World. On that date, Roland H. Harrison, a grandson of William Niven, telephoned me in my office at McKeldin Library. William Niven served as the model for Givens in Katherine Anne Porter's "Maria Concepcion" as well as the central figure in her sketch "The Charmed Life." Dr. Harrison, a retired research chemist, was at the beginning of the work that resulted in the publication of Buried Cities, Forgotten Gods , a biography of his grandfather published by Texas Tech University Press in 1999. Larry Niven quickly became regarded as the leading practitioner of "hard" SF. "The idea is truly the hero" - a reviewer's praise for a later novel-aptly sums up both his greatest strength and weakness. Like Heinlein and Asimov, Niven constructed a future history, Known Space, a series of related stories later codified into a chart. Unlike his predecessors, his schema included an elaborate million-and-a-half year prehistory and several varieties of aliens. It has become a popular mythology, with other writers contribut- ing tales to the period of Man-Kzin wars, which Niven neglects, admitting his lack of expertise about military subjects. Niven's most celebrated talent is his ability to create grandly scaled worlds that dwarf their inhabitants.
