Delamain is known almost entirely for his essay, Grammelogia, or the Mathematical Ring, which deals with practical mathematics and a couple of instruments, and for the controversy the work generated with Oughtred. He also published The Making, Description, and Use of . . . a Horizontal Quadrant, 1631, which was part of the controversy. As far as Oughtred was concerned, Delamain was a simple plagiarist who stole instruments that Oughtred designed but did not seriously understand them. On the whole modern commentators appear to doubt Delamain's originality. There is enough uncertainty for me to leave him in the catalogue.

The following page contains sections of William Oughtred's Circles of Proportion. The circles have an interesting bibliographical history but this is not the place to elaborate on those details. I have not, as yet, been able to include the full text. Any errors and omissions from the original are mine alone. I have tried to preserve the original spelling.

The invention of the Slide Rule
Edmund Gunter (15811626)
Edmund Gunter's most important book entitled Description and use of the Sector , was first published in English in 1623. This has been described as ``the most important work on the science of navigation to be published in the seventeenth century." A sector is a mathematical instrument consisting of two hinged arms on which there are engraved scales which can be used to help with calculations. This is not a slide-rule; the single scale is used in conjunction with a pair of compasses. What makes Gunter's sector special is that it is the first mathematical instrument to be inscribed with a logarithmic scale to help solve numerical problems. In practice the points of the compass tend to damage the scales which reduces the accuracy of the instrument.
William Oughtred (15741660)
William Oughtred was a clergyman and keen mathematician. He is believed to have introduced the x symbol for multiplication in his book Clavis Mathematicae (Key to Mathematics), written about 1628 and published in London in 1631. This was a very important maths text book at the time. Newton read and was influenced by it for example. He is now generally though to be the inventer of the slide rule. Both straight and circular rules are described in a book with the title

Background Picture
The picture in the background is that of Albury Church, Surrey, taken by myself during August 2002. William Oughtred, the inventor of the slide rule, was rector there for 50 years from 1610 to his death in 1660. Herewith is a brief history of his life. Born: Eton, Buckinghamshire, 5 March 1575 Died: Albury, near Guildford, Surrey, 30 June 1660 William Oughtred attended Eton School, which although a very famous school was in fact his local school. From there he went to King's College Cambridge, entering in 1592. Three years later he became a Fellow of King's College, received his B.A. in 1596 and his M.A. in the year 1600. It is surprising that although very little mathematics was taught at either Eton or Cambridge at this time Oughtred became passionately interested. He wrote:- ... the time which over and above those usuall studies I employed upon the mathematicall sciences I redeemed night by night from my naturall sleep, defrauding my body, and inuring it to watching, cold, and labour, while most others tooke their rest. Oughtred was ordained an Episcopal minister in 1603. In 1604 he became vicar of Shalford and later, in 1610, he became rector of Albury. Oughtred took private pupils who came to his house and lived there free of charge while they received mathematical instruction. He had many pupils but the most famous were John Wallis, Christopher Wren and Richard Delamain.

Martin, Benjamin Biographia Philosophica Being an Account of the Lives, Writings, and Inventions of the Most Eminent Philosophers and Mathematicians . Distributed for the Thoemmes Press. 1764 Edition. 567 p. 5-3/8 x 8-1/2 2002 Cloth CUSA $140.00tx 1-85506-973-3 Spring 2002 Benjamin Martin (1704-82) came from a family of Surrey farmers and seems to have received little in the way of formal education. However, he taught himself mathematics and astronomy, and in time became an accomplished inventor and maker of scientific instruments. He was also a keen disciple of Newtonon whose physics he gave public lecturesas well as a considerable philosopher of language. Martin published many books on these various subjects, but his chief ambition as a writer was nothing less than to provide a synopsis of all scientific and philosophical knowledge in a grand fourteen-volume series. Martin only ever completed five of these projected booktwo on philology, two on mathematics, and the Biographia Philosophica This rare little encyclopaedia contains entries detailing the lives and works of 157 people, from Thales and Euclid in antiquity to Sir Isaac Newton and Dr Nicholas Saunderson in Martin's own century. Typically, an entry will begin with biographical information and then move on to a critical assessment of its subject's work, 'digested according to the Order of Time in which they lived'. Sometimes, a bibliography is given in conclusion. As was usual in his era, Martin construed the term 'philosophy' broadly enough to include the sciences as well as abstract thought.
