Reviews Table of Contents From the Ishango Bone of central Africa and the Inca quipu of South America to the dawn of modern mathematics, The Crest of the Peacock makes it clear that human beings everywhere have been capable of advanced and innovative mathematical thinking. George Gheverghese Joseph takes us on a breathtaking multicultural tour of the roots and shoots of non-European mathematics. He shows us the deep influence the Egyptians and Babylonians had on the Greeks; the Arabs' major creative contributions; and the astounding range of successes of the great civilizations of India and China. This challenging and erudite book questions familiar assumptions and enlarges our sense of what we mean by mathematics. George Gheverghese Joseph was born in Kerala, southern India, and lived in India for nine years. His family then moved to Mombassa in Kenya, where he received his schooling. He studied at the University of Leicester, and later at the University of Manchester, where he completed his postgraduate studies. He has worked in various occupations that have taken him to places all over the world, including East and Central Africa, India, Papua New Guinea, and South East Asia. Reviews: "Enthralling. . . . After reading it, we cannot see the past in the same comforting haze of age-old stories, faithfully and uncritically retold from teacher to pupil down the years. . . . Invaluable for mathematics teachers at all levels."

    4 Volumes
Thomas Young’s Life and Works illustrates the greatest scientific achievements of Thomas Young (1773–1829). Chiefly remembered for his work on physiological optics, Young initiated important paths of investigation which other scientists were later able to take up and complete. Originally published separately, but intended as companion works, the one-volume Life of Thomas Young, edited by George Peacock, and the three-volume Miscellaneous Works of the Late Thomas Young , edited by George Peacock and John Leitch, complete this collection of all of Young’s major works. Volume 1 [529pp] Life of Thomas Young (1855) Edited by George Peacock Volumes 2–4 Miscellaneous Works of the Late Thomas Young [1855] Edited by George Peacock (vols. 1 and 2) and John Leitch Volume 1 of this four-volume collection is the standard Life of Thomas Young originally published in 1855 and edited by the Young scholar, Peacock. The work features rare manuscripts, including the now lost Young journal; it is not only the definitive source on Young’s life, but also a valuable historical resource on the development and context of Young’s scientific breakthroughs. Miscellaneous Works of the Late Thomas Young collects Young’s contributions to the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society , including his famous Bakerian Lectures and key articles prepared for the Supplement of the

Book Review George Gheverghese Joseph, The Crest of the Peacock: Non-European Roots of Mathematics 2nd. ed. London: Penguin Books, 2000. To order this book from Amazon.com, click here Reviewed by Abdul Karim Bangura In her article, " Good-Bye Pythagoras? " (in The Chronicle of Higher Education , October 6, 2000, pp.16-17), Elizabeth Greene cites the following cases of academic institutions where ethnomathematics has been thoroughly embraced:
    • Ron Eglash employs African fractals in computer-graphics simulations courses at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
    • Arthur B. Powell works out river-crossing problems based on different cultures in an algebra course at the Newark campus of Rutgers University.
    • Jim Berta teaches about the Cartesian coordinate system using a cultural analogy of street mapping in towns settled by Mormons at Utah State University.
Greene adds that, in college classes in algebra, calculus, geometry, statistics, and the history of mathematics, among other subjects, and in degree programs for future elementary- and secondary-school teachers, professors are using ethnomathematics to define a new method of teaching mathematics.

A PEACOCK spreading its gorgeous tail mocked a Crane that passed by, ridiculing the ashen hue of its plumage and saying, "I am robed, like a king, in gold and purple and all the colors of the rainbow; while you have not a bit of color on your wings." "True," replied the Crane; "but I soar to the heights of heaven and lift up my voice to the stars, while you walk below, like a cock, among the birds of the dunghill." The Peacock And Juno
THE PEACOCK made complaint to Juno that, while the nightingale pleased every ear with his song, he himself no sooner opened his mouth than he became a laughingstock to all who heard him. The Goddess, to console him, said, "But you far excel in beauty and in size. The splendor of the emerald shines in your neck and you unfold a tail gorgeous with painted plumage." "But for what purpose have I," said the bird, "this dumb beauty so long as I am surpassed in song?' "The lot of each," replied Juno, "has been assigned by the will of the Fatesto thee, beauty; to the eagle, strength; to the nightingale, song; to the raven, favorable, and to the crow, unfavorable auguries. These are all contented with the endowments allotted to them." This Online Literature Library is sponsored by Knowledge Matters Ltd

Leader says union movement will miss Kelty
    The World Today
    - Wednesday, August 18, 1999 12:45
JOHN HIGHFIELD: Well, like many people inside the Labor movement, ACTU president Jennie George has been relatively quiet about Bill Kelty over recent months. But today she's been telling The World Today that Mr Kelty's contribution to the trade union movement will indeed be sorely missed.
She's agreed to speak exclusively to our chief political correspondent, Matt Peacock.
JENNIE GEORGE: He's given all his life to the movement. He was a brilliant student at school. He could have gone on to make a fortune in private enterprise, but no, he chose to continue to work in the interests of ordinary working people, and for that alone he deserves great respect.
He's always had at the centre of his focus the unity of the movement, and you know we're a broad church, keeping us all together and focussed, has been a big challenge and Bill's always been there. He's resolved the nasty disputes behind the scenes, he's been committed to young people, the traineeship program that he and his friend Lindsay Fox got off the ground.
But more than ever, I think I'll remember when I look at people like my mother who retired from work with no superannuation, every worker today at least has some measure of dignity in retirement, thanks largely to the work of Bill, driving through superannuation as an industrial right, an achievement for all working people.

Peaches and nectarines are frequently cultivated in well-drained pots, and are then usually trained as pyramids, and in some cases as half-standards. The potting must be done very firmly, using turf y loam with which a little mortar rubble has been mixed. The trees are to be top-dressed from time to time with well-decayed manure and turfy loam, and considerable space must be left in the pots for this and the watering. The following are some of the best peaches and nectarines, arranged in the order of the times of their ripening:— Peaches. Early Beatrice - - m. July ‘R I G or e e. Aug. Early Louise - . e.
