Perseus
Transit Date of principal star:
12 November With a father like Zeus, it's no wonder Perseus became one of antiquity's most notable characters. Even his name ("per Zeus") identifies his lineage. Zeus had fallen in love with Danae, the beautiful daughter of Acrisius, king of Argos. An oracle had predicted that Danae would some day bore a son who would kill the king, so Acrisius hid her in a bronze (or ivory) tower. But Zeus knew of her beauty, and one day he changed himself into a shower of gold dust and visited Danae's cell. When the child Perseus was born, Acrisius put him and his mother in a wooden chest and threw it into the sea. The wooden chest floated to the island of Seriphos, where the fisherman Dictys rescued it. He took them to his brother Polydectes (or Polydeuces), who happened to be the king of Seriphos. Polydectes raised Perseus to manhood. Perseus grew to found the city state of Mycenae, on the Peloponnesian peninsula, and become its first king. At least this is the myth. In reality, that city was founded at about 3000 BC, and ca 1650 BC to 1400 BC the Mycenaean civilisation was one of the most brilliant in all of Greece, until its sudden collapse ca 1300 BC. As for Perseus, he is mostly remembered for one series of adventures: the killing of the Gorgon Medusa and the rescue of Andromeda.

The Story
The King Wants No Grandkids! Pereus was a son of Zeus by Danae, the daughter of King Acrisius of Argos. The king locked poor Danae away in a dungeon where no man could see her, because an oracle had foretold that King Acrisius would die by the hand of his grandson. What better way to forestall the prophecy than by ensuring that his daughter had no children at all? But the king's precautions were defeated by the actions of the gods. The Shower of Gold Zeus looked down from Olympus and saw Danae languishing in her dungeon and desired her. He approached her in the form of a shower of golden rain that fell through the bars of the dungeon into Danae's lap. She became pregnant and bore Zeus' son Perseus. A Fisherman Receives a Gift from the Sea Acrisius was furious and locked both the boy and the mother into a chest which he had tossed into the sea. After a few days the chest washed ashore in a different land, where it was discovered by a fisherman named Dictys, who broke open the chest to discover the mother and child. Dictys adopted the boy and raised him as his own child. Perseus Gets in the Way As it happened, Dictys was the brother of the king of that land, King Polydectes. After many years, Polydectes met Danae and desired her, but Perseus, now grown, stood in the way of the king. The frustrated king invented a plot to get rid of Perseus.

How Building a Digital Library Challenges the Humanities and Technology
Gregory Crane
Editor-in-Chief

For more than ten years, the Perseus Project has been developing a digital library in the humanities. Initial work concentrated exclusively on ancient Greek culture, using this domain as a case study for a compact, densely hypertextual library on a single, but interdisciplinary, subject. Since it has achieved its initial goals with the Greek materials, however, Perseus is using the existing library to study the new possibilities (and limitations) of the electronic medium and to serve as the foundation for work in new cultural domains: Perseus has begun coverage of Roman and now Renaissance materials, with plans for expansion into other areas of the humanities as well. Our goal is not only to help traditional scholars conduct their research more effectively but, more importantly, to help humanists use the technology to redefine the relationship between their work and the broader intellectual community.
Introduction
The Perseus Project is a digital library that has been under continuous development since the spring of 1987.

Perseus Mythology and History
  • The Greek Hero.

  • The Medusa once had been a beautiful woman with long and glowing hair. So proud was she of her beauty that she dared compare herself with Athena, the Goddess of War. On hearing of the woman's bragging, Athena turned Medusa into a hideous monster. Where her long beautiful hair had once hung were now writhing and hissing snakes. So hideous was the sight of her that any human or animal who chanced a gaze upon her was instantly turned to stone.
Perseus was a favorite of Athena and the wing-footed god, Hermes. Athena lent Perseus her bright shield and Hermes lent him his winged shoes. So equipped, Perseus set out and flew over sea and land to where the Medusa lived.
The Medusa was sleeping when Perseus arrived. Silently he crept toward her, while not looking at her directly. So bright was Athena's shield that he could clearly see the Medusa's reflection in it and so he backed toward her and with a mighty back-handed blow cut off her head. Then with his eyes closed he seized it and stuffed it into the special sack he had brought along.
Joyful beyond words, Cepheus and Cassiopeia led Perseus and Andromeda to their house, where a great feast and celebration were prepared. Perseus and Andromeda were married and led a long, happy life together. There first-born son, Peres, is said to have given rise to those people who became known as Persians.

The Perseus Cluster of Galaxies
Digitized Sky Survey Explanation: Here is one of the largest objects that anyone will ever see on the sky. Each of the fuzzy blobs in the above picture is a galaxy, together making up the Perseus Cluster, one of the closest clusters of galaxies . We view the cluster through the foreground of faint stars in our own Milky Way Galaxy . It takes light roughly 300 million years to get here from this region of the Universe , so we see this cluster as it existed before the age of the dinosaurs . Also known as Abell 426 , the center of the Perseus Cluster is a prodigious source of X-ray radiation , and so helps astronomers explore how clusters formed and how gas and dark matter interact . The Perseus Cluster of Galaxies is part of the Pisces-Perseus supercluster of galaxies , which spans over 15 degrees and contains over 1000 galaxies. A. Fabian ( IoA Cambridge ) et al., NASA Explanation: The Perseus Cluster of thousands of galaxies, 320 million light-years distant, is one of the most massive objects in the Universe . At its core lies the giant cannibal galaxy Perseus A (NGC 1275) , accreting matter as gas and galaxies fall into it. Representing low, medium, and high energy x-rays as red, green, and blue colours respectively, this Chandra X-ray Observatory image shows remarkable details of x-ray emission from this monster galaxy and surrounding hot (30-70 million degrees C) cluster gas . The bright central source is the supermassive black hole at the core of Perseus A itself. Dark circular voids just above and below the galaxy center, each about half the size of our own Milky Way Galaxy , are believed to be magnetic bubbles of energetic particles blown by the accreting black hole.
