Playfair, John Playfair, John, , Scottish mathematician, physicist, and geologist. He was educated at St. Andrews and Edinburgh and taught first mathematics and then physics and astronomy at the latter university. His Illustrations of the Huttonian Theory of the Earth (1802) elucidated the methods and principles of his friend James Hutton and established uniformitarianism as the foundation of the new science of geology. He also published texts on geometry, physics, and astronomy.

PLAYFAIR, John Illustrations of the Huttonian theory of the earth. Edinburgh and London Printed for Cadell and Davies (London), and William Creech (Edinburgh) 1802 8vo., xx, 528 pp., With errata. Contemporary full calf. First edition of this monumental work which in essence established the modern age of geology. Playfair believed, and rightly so, that his friend James Hutton's Theory of the Earth was the geological equivalent of Newton's Principia, but that it must be restated and elaborated on without its author's religious ideology and heavy prose. Playfair set out to discover what evidence existed in the earth itself that would shed light on the history of the planet, and sets forth his findings with an orderly, logical arrangement and remarkable precision: "...for precision of statement and felicity of language, it has no superior" (Geikie). Mrs. William Playfair nee Emily Kitson, 1841-1916 John Singer Sargent American painter Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens, San Marino, CA Oil on canvas 59 x 38 in. Jpg: Traditional Fine Art Online
    From: Traditional Fine Art Online
Mrs. William Playfair was exhibited to great acclaim at the Royal Academy in 1887 and at the 1888 Paris Salon. The sitter (nee Emily Kitson, 1841-1916) is shown wearing a sumptnous yellow satin gown and a fur-lined, dark green velvet cloak. Set against an abstract background of deep red, she is ready to step out wearing distinctive jewels and carrying a fashionable fan and evening bag. As the fully mature forty-six-year-old wife of England's most prominent obstetrician and the mother of five children Emily Playfair appears solid and secure in her position and wealth. Yet she is also shown by Sargent as disarmingly relaxed, smiling with twinkling eyes and an open moutha pose unusual for a woman of her social standing." Traditional Fine Art Online
