Architect, William Henry Playfair was born in London in July 1789, the younger son of architect, James Playfair. On the death of his father in 1794, he was sent to Edinburgh to live with his uncle, Professor John Playfair, mathematician and geologist, and a leading figure in the Edinburgh Enlightenment. Playfair's uncle arranged for his education. Following his father's profession, Playfair studied under William Starke. After working in London for Robert Smirke and James Wyatt 1813-15, and a brief visit to France, he launched his practice in Edinburgh and won the competition in 1815 for the completion of Robert Adam's scheme for Edinburgh University, designing the interior of the Old Quad (1819-27). While Playfair's most important works were executed in the Greek revivalist or classical style, he was also competent in other styles, for example, the Jacobean Donaldson's Hospital (1842-54). He also built country houses and villas in the Italianate style, for example, Belmont (1828), designed for Lord MacKenzie in Edinburgh.

He was a dancing master and theatre owner, a scholar of Greek and Latin, a poet and translator. But for our sakes, he is remembered as a pioneer in the making of that indispensable tool for the modern traveller, the road atlas. Despite being ridiculed by English poets and literary standard-makers John Dryden in MacFlecknoe and Alexander Pope in the Dunciad, Ogilby was put in charge of the poetic part of the coronation ceremony of Charles II by the king himself. Following the great fire that destroyed most of the city of London in 1666, Ogilby set up a printing shop, calling himself the "king's cosmographer and geographical printer." He produced many notable, illustrated volumes including Britannia...A Geographical and Historical Description of the Principal Roads thereof (1675), considered a landmark in accurate road description.

A Scatter of Monuments CALTON HILL, though it does not possess the drama of the Castle Rock or the mass of Arthur's Seat, is readily recognisable to the stranger: it's the one with all the monuments scattered about it. The visitor who climbs Calton Hill and wanders among these impressive memorials dips into a number of chapters of Edinburgh's history. But, first, look at the view. To the west, Princes Street and the castle ; to the south, the Old Town with Arthur's Seat crouching in the background; to the east and north lie the Forth, the port of Leith , and our first glimpse of the New Town , of which more later. National Monument The largest of the structures on Calton Hill is the National Monument. It was conceived in 1816 (the year after the Battle of Waterloo) as a memorial to the fallen of the Napoleonic wars. Designed by William Henry Playfair , initially it was to be a reproduction of the Parthenon at Athens. It was begun in 1822 but funds ran out. Over the years the fragment has become an accepted part of the Edinburgh skyline, and indeed to many people this truncated war memorial has an appropriate symbolism. Nearby, the tower resembling an up-turned telescope is the Nelson Monument, commemorating the victor of Trafalgar (1805), which ruined Napoleon's plans for the invasion and subjugation of this country. The monument, built in 1816, has an interior stairway to the top, where its celebrated time-ball was installed some years later to work in conjunction with the One o'Clock Gun at the castle.

Omniana: No. 13 A Millennial String Of Bronzes
by Ray Footman WHAT LINKS James Boswell to Julius Nyerere, Jennie Lee to Joseph Lister, or Mungo Park to the early 19th century Miranda who managed to secure an education and practise medicine by living as James Barry? The answer is they are all alumni of the University of Edinburgh but that they are also among those individually featured in a series of bronze plaques, instituted for the new millennium as part of a policy to try and acknowledge more publicly some of the distinguished and famous names associated in the past with the UoE. The initial twenty six chosen in 2000 have now been joined by a further eleven and it is the intention to go an adding a further four or so each year until the University has done more justice to at least a good selection of those who have featured in its history over the course of more than 400 years. Selection is far from easy, for the names suggested always exceed the number that can be chosen in any one year, and it is the aim to try and get some balance, if possible, between the different centuries, disciplines and roles, to say nothing of gender - particularly difficult since women have only featured on the graduation roll for the last hundred and ten years.

    80. John Notman (sidebar)
playfair introduced Notman to the Italianate Revival style that he used to build Accordingto Constance Grieff, the author of john Notman Architect, 18101865
    http://etc.princeton.edu/Campus/text_notman.html
    John Notman (sidebar)
To understand the uproar behind the erection of the new Chapel in 1847, review the career of the architect who came under such heavy fire, and the influence of the Ecclesiologist movement on American architecture. Notman's first major commission, in 1836, was for the Laurel Hill cemetery, outside of Philadelphia. Two of his designs were included in A. J. Downing's 1841 Treatise on the Theory and Practice of Landscape Gardening , and one of his Italianate villas was included in the 1842 Cottage Residences , by the same author. After weathering the depressed building market in the late 1830s, Notman enjoyed a prosperous 1840s. According to Constance Grieff, the author of John Notman Architect, 1810-1865 Notman was, in sum, one of America's most innovative architects in the second quarter of the 19th century. Although not stylistically an originator, he was an importer of sophisticated design ideas from Britain, translating them skillfully for his American clientele. He also was quick to utilize the technical developments that transformed the art of building in the 19th century, and he was alert to the availability of new materials and new techniques. For more information on the relationship between Notman's purported religious views or knowledge and the architectural controversy of the Old Chapel, see the sidebar "Old Chapel."
