Of individual paintings we mayspecify “ Sir Roger de Coverley going to Church” (1819); May-day in the Time of Queen Elizabeth” (i8ai); “ Sancho Panza and the Duchess” (1824); “Uncle Toby and the Widow Wadman “ (s8~i); La Malade Imaginaire, act iii. sc. 6 (1843); and the “ Duke’s Chaplain Enraged leaving the Table,” from Don Quixote (1849). Many of his more important subjects exist in varying replicas. Scope and content The Scientists Collection is a miscellaneous assemblage of individual letters and small groups of correspondence of American and European scientists from the 17th through 20th centuries. The disciplines represented are varied, with significant depth in natural history, conchology, geology, and astronomy, and there are separate series for physicists (58 items, relating especially to Max Planck), and American-Russian scientific exchange prior to the Russian Revolution (46 items). The circle of Darwin and, more generally, of mid-19th century British natural historians, is also well represented in the Scientists Collection. Included in the collection are valuable letters from John Edward Gray, William Whewell, John Lubbock, and John Stevens Henslow, and there is a small set of letters from Robert Chambers, as well as a fascinating exchange between the publisher John Murray and the naturalist, Henry W. CALGARY FLAMES NAME JIM PLAYFAIR ASSISTANT COACH
Calgary, AB -
“The addition of Jim Playfair completes our coaching staff,” said Button. “Under the leadership of Darryl Sutter our coaching staff gives our team and players a strong opportunity to succeed.” “Jim and I have a bond because we won a championship together (1990 IHL Turner Cup),” said Flames head coach Darryl Sutter. “Being a former defenseman, I really think we need that here to work with our young d-men. And he has worked with several of our players so I think it is an easy transition for him.” Sutter continued, “Jim is a winner as a player and a coach. He has earned the right to be here.” Playfair was named head coach of the Saint John Flames on August 10, 2000 and has spent the past three seasons with Calgary’s primary development club of the American Hockey League. During the 2000-2001 season, his first behind the bench in Saint John, Playfair led the Flames to their first AHL Calder Cup championship and was named minor professional coach of the year by The Hockey News. Over the course of his tenure, Saint John has posted an 83-77-22-10 record. “I’m looking forward to the opportunity to work with Darryl Sutter and his current staff in Calgary,” said Playfair. “I’m very familiar with many of Calgary’s players as a result of my development role in Saint John and I’m excited about assisting Darryl as he moves our team forward to a higher level of success.”

The new Concourse Level will provide a new shop, restaurant suite, lecture theatre and educational rooms linking to both the existing Royal Scottish Academy and National Gallery buildings with two new public staircases and lifts. It will provide new IT exhibition spaces amd additional plant areas to serve these as well as adding a new entrance, circulation and reception areas from Princes Gardens East. Phase One of the Project upgrades the existing Royal Scottish Academy Building providing modern plant and environmental standards, new disabled access facilitites, a new lift for art
handling as well as a new concourse link staircase and lift. It provides additional exhibition spaces and the means to mount several exhibitions simultaneously. Phase One will also deal with the conservation aspects of the existing structure, as extensive underpinning has already been necessary to prevent further movement to the original building.
