Pack ice is broken up in the Arctic and Antarctic by the action of waves. Treating each ice floe as a floating viscoelastic plate and using scattering theory can successfully model this process. Agreement with observations is good. The problem has a direct relevance to climate, as the sea-ice modulates the way the atmosphere and ocean interact.
    Applied Mathematics at Otago
To do applied mathematics, students require the basic calculus and algebra skills that are taught in MATH 160 and MATH 170 or equivalent papers elsewhere. After the first year, applied mathematics options begin to emerge but most papers have both a pure and applied flavour, as progression to higher levels in either case needs similar mathematical apparatus. A major with an applied mathematics focus could include some of the 200-level papers:

Mathematician Report Index Below is a list of mathematicians. You may choose from this list or report on a mathematician not listed here. In either case, you must discuss with me the mathematician you have chosen prior to starting your report. No two students may write a report on the same mathematician. I would advise you to go to the library before choosing your topic as there might not be much information on the mathematician you have chosen. Also, you should determine the topic early in the term so that you can "lock-in" your report topic!! The report must include: 1. The name of the mathematician. 2. The years the mathematician was alive. 3. A biography. 4. The mathematician's major contribution(s) to mathematics and an explanation of the importance. 5. A historical perspective during the time the mathematician was alive.
Some suggestions on the historical perspective might be:
    (a) Any wars etc.
    (b) Scientific breakthroughs of the time
    (c) Major discoveries of the time
    (d) How did this mathematician change history etc.

D URING HIS LONG CAREER Edward James McShane made significant contributions to the calculus of variations, integration theory, stochastic calculus, and exterior ballistics. In addition, he served as a national leader in mathematical and science policy matters and in efforts to improve the undergraduate mathematical curriculum. McShane was born in New Orleans on May 10, 1904, and grew up there. His father, Augustus, was a medical doctor and his mother, Harriet, a former schoolteacher. He graduated from Tulane University in 1925, receiving simultaneously bachelor of engineering and bachelor of science degrees, as well as election to Phi Beta Kappa. He turned down an offer from General Electric and instead continued as a student instructor of mathematics at Tulane, receiving a master's degree in 1927. In the summer of 1927 McShane entered graduate school at the University of Chicago, from which he received his Ph.D. in 1930 under the supervision of Gilbert Ames Bliss. He interrupted his studies during 1928-29 for financial reasons to teach at the University of Wichita. It was at Chicago that McShane's long-standing interest in the calculus of variations began. From 1930 to 1932 he held a National Research Council Fellowship, spent at Princeton, Ohio State, Harvard, and Chicago. In 1931 he married Virginia Haun. The McShanes had three children, Neill (deceased), Jennifer, and Virginia.
