John Pratt Nesbit Nesbit Family History
INTRODUCTION: This is a facsimile produced by the Nesbitt/Nisbet Society, Australia from a photocopy of the original manuscript of the “Nesbit Family History” by the late Reverend John Pratt Nesbit of Princeton, Indiana, who worked on the project for nearly thirty years. The photocopy was supplied to the Nesbitt/Nisbet Society-Australia in 1993 by Raymond John Nesbit of 545 Hartnell Place, Sacramento, Ca. 85825; who had this to say of the project: “The author traces the Nesbit history from the time of William the Conqueror (1072) through the migration of the five sons of John Nesbit of Roxburghshire, Scotland to the USA in 1725. It covers in some detail the descendants of the five sons up to the late 1930s. “It was my privilege to meet the author when he stayed at our home in Bedford, Ohio for a few days in the late 1920s. My father, John Clyde Nesbit (1875-1951) was his first cousin. “This unpublished manuscript has been in the possession of our family for nearly fifty years”. Raymond John Nesbit

    John Lee Pratt Chatham Manor
The Pratt's purchased Chatham for $150,000 in 1931. Though a man of wealth and importance, Mr. Pratt was in many ways a simple man. Because he valued his privacy, relatively little his known about his ownership of Chatham. Because the famous Chatham gardens drew too many spectators, in the mid-1950's, he scaled back the gardens in hopes they would attract fewer visitors who infringed on his privacy. Yet, after retirement, he could often be found working in the gardens with his hired help. Rather than use an automobile, he usually walked to town, where it is said, he participated each week in a penny-ante poker game with friends.
The Pratt's were known philanthropists. During their lives, and later in their wills, the couple quietly donated millions of dollars to universities (notably the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech), research centers, and other charities. The art world, too, benefited from the Pratt's generosity, the Virginia Fine Arts Museum in Richmond receiving Mrs. Pratt's collection of Czar Nicholas jewels, including her famous Faberge' eggs. Chatham and the surrounding 30 acres were willed to the National Park Service upon Mr. Pratt's death on December 20, 1975. Chatham Gardens
