Thomas Mann Biografia i publicacions Paul Thomas Mann neix a Lübeck (Alemanya) l´any 1875. El seu pare, Thomas Johann Heinrich Mann, és comerciant i esdevé cònsul l´any 1863, mor l´any 1891. La seva mare, Julia da Silvia-Bruhns és brasilera. Té quatre germans Víctor, Heinrich, Julia i Carla. L´any 1894 Thomas Mann acaba els estudis de batxillerat i s´instal·la amb la família a München. Assisteixa a cursos de la Universitat, com a oient. 1895 - Col·labora a la revista «Das Zwanzigste Jahrhundert», el director de la qual és el seu germà Heinrich. 1898 - Esdevé redactor de la revista «Simplicissimus». 1901 - Viatja a Florència. Apareix la primera edició de la novel·la Buddenbrooks. 1905 - Es casa amb Katia Pringsheim, filla del matemàtic Alfred Pringsheim. Publica un article titulat «Hores difícils». neix la seva primera filla, Erika. 1906 - Neix el seu fill, Klaus. 1907 - Estrena una obra de teatre, Fiorenza. 1909 - Neix el seu fill, Angelus Gottfried Thomas. 1910 - Neix el seu quart fill, una noia que es dirà Monika. Es suïcida la seva germana, Carla, que era actriu. Aquest mateix any Thomas Mann acompanya a Gustav Mahler en l´estrena de la seva Octava Simfonia, a München. Mann s´inspira en la música de Mahler per escriure la seva novel·la La mort a Venècia.

Sie war recht hübsch und stand der berühmten Schönheit ihrer Mutter wohl kaum nach. In "Meine ungeschriebenen Memoiren" wird ja das bekannte "Trambahn-Abenteuer" von 1903 geschildert, bei dem sie Thomas Mann erst kennenlernte: Katia hatte sich an der Haltestelle Schelling-/Türkenstraße beim Aussteigen geweigert, dem Trambahnschaffner ihr Billet zu zeigen. Sie sprang wütend von der Plattform und wurde vom Schaffner mit "du Furie" verabschiedet. Thomas Mann, ebenfalls im Wagen, war von dem Ereignis so hingerissen, dass er Katia unbedingt näher kennenzulernen musste. 1905 heiratete Katia bekanntlich Thomas Mann und verschaffte diesem erst Zugang zu den höchsten gesellschaftlichen Kreisen in München. 1884 reiste Dyck, bereits damals

It is a great honor and a great pleasure to open this Congress. Thirdly, I want to say that I am accustomed, as a mathematician, to being in a nearly invisible field of work. Mathematics is neither a hard science whose discoveries are widely broadcast nor an Art, which delights a major part of the public. So I am especially pleased that our Congress here in Berlin has attracted the attention of the Federal Minister of Education and Science, the State Secretaries of the German President and the Ministry of Finance and the Governing Mayor of Berlin. I am further delighted that there is a stronger public awareness here in Berlin of mathematics and of our Congress than I can recall at any previous Congresses. During this Congress we have an opportunity to present mathematics to people engaged in other professions and the organizing committee has put together an exciting program to accomplish this, as you will hear shortly. Let me do my part by saying a few words about how mathematics relates to the broader cultural world. Mathematics is usually explained and justified to the world at large by giving examples of important inventions that could not have been made without its help. This is embodied in the myth that we mathematicians concern ourselves with eternal truths, which we hand on to physicists, who pass them on to chemists and engineers, etc. who finally pass them on to mankind as a whole. There are definitely important examples of ideas passing along this chain (in fact in both directions!) but I also think it is a rather narrow view to isolate mathematics on such a pedestal. There is a more socially grounded view, which says that mathematics and mathematicians are deeply embedded in human culture and are tied to the Arts in particular where the love of abstraction also flourishes. Let me illustrate this.

The authors talk about amusing anecdotes of Cambridge in the 1950's before turning to the character Alfred Young. Then there is a disquisition on the two types of exinsting mathematicians: the problem solvers and the theoricians. The former only find interest in the resolution of a problem, while the latter generate a theory which ends by making the original problem trivial. Hermann Grassmann and the external algebra are then mentioned. Wattenmeerstation Sylt Historisches Research on Helgoland for more than 150 years The first laboratory building of the "Royal Biological Institution on Helgoland" and those who worked in it (1894). In 1892, two years after Helgoland had become a German territory, the "Royal Biological Institute on Helgoland" was established by the Prussian Ministry of Culture. The first Director, Friedrich Heincke (1892-1921), considered it his primary responsibility to research into the flora and fauna of the sea areas around Helgoland, with particular reference to livestock. In the end, however, the area covered by the Institute's research work stretched beyond the North Sea to the Baltic and up to the Arctic seas. Even in those days, the present-day fields of operation were already taking shape, namely basic research in the field of marine biology, work by guest researchers, courses, supplying materials, and the Aquarium. In 1920, the first marine biology course on held on Helgoland was completed by 30 participants. As the research effort grew, so, too, did the need for premises. Thomas Mann Collection A Finding Aid Manuscripts Division Department of Rare Books and Special Collections Princeton University Library Background Series Box/Folder Listing Background The Thomas Mann Collection consists of letters, manuscripts, photographs, and other materials given by Caroline Newton, and also of those collected by Princeton University Library with funds provided by Caroline Newton. Newton first met Thomas Mann in Berlin in 1929. When he had to leave Germany in 1937, she offered him her house in Jamestown, Rhode Island, and then she helped the Manns establish their home at 65 Stockton Street, Princeton, New Jersey, in 1938. By then Mann was a major German novelist, winner of the 1929 Nobel Prize for Literature, author of Buddenbrooks . He wrote Lotte in Weimar and began Joseph The Provider while in Princeton. He died August 12, 1955. Caroline Newton arranged for two Mann commemorations at Princeton in 1964 and 1970. The Letters of Thomas Mann to Caroline Newton were printed by Princeton University Library in 1971, with English translation of all 57 letter (1937-1955). A selection of Mann correspondence is printed in Thomas Mann Briefe , S. Fischer Verlag, 1961-1965, 3 volumes, and references are given in this List (call number 3471.73.3185 and EX).

Jacobsohn prüft, was ihm da in handschriftlicher Form vorliegt, und entscheidet sich mit einem: “Aber bitte erst einmal tippen!” zur Annahme der Texte. Diese Arbeiten - “Arthur Rimbaud” “Ueber Georg Trakl” “Kaspar Hauser” und über Huysmans’ “Là-bas” - sind dann freilich, als sie zwischen September 1924 und April 1925 erscheinen, mit “Klaus Mann” gekennzeichnet und Oheim Pringsheim, darauf angesprochen, mochte noch in seinem Todesjahr nicht billigen, wie der Neffe da seinen Rat anonymer Autorenschaft unterlaufen und Siegfried Jacobsohn um Preisgabe und Nennung seines Namens gebeten hatte , konträr zu seiner autobiographischen Darstellung im Wendepunkt . Dort nämlich unterstellte aus dem Abstand vieler Jahre Klaus Mann dem Redakteur Jacobsohn die Entdeckung der Urheberschaft und mithin die Enttarnung seines literarischen Debüts. Eine Unwahrheit - und “Berater” Pringsheim, der doch den “entscheidenden ersten Schritt” in dieser “Karriere [ge]lenkt” hatte, begriff schnell, dass Klaus Mann erst später [...] fühlen sollte, “wieviel er sich selbst damit verdorben” hatte.
