The Radon Transform
Tomographic methods such as Computerised Tomography (CT) do not generate three dimensional images of an object directly. Instead sectional two-dimensional images are reconstructed from a set of projections. For CT the imaged property is the linear absorption coefficient . The relative X-ray transmission along some path is given by the line integral where ds is some differential path length and is the function describing the 2-D distribution of absorption coefficients in our imaged object. Mathematically a projection can be described by the Radon transform (see Johann Radon (1887-1956) ). The Radon transform is a projective transformation of a two-dimensional function onto the polar co-ordinate space (see Figure 1) and is given as where , is a unit vector normal to the projection beam and is a vector on the projection beam. is called a projection, and for the sake of generality our imaged property is represented by the two-dimensional function . Johann Radon source Johann Radon lived from 1887 to 1956 He was alive during the Great Depression. Johann Radon worked out the mathematics of reconstructing a function from a set of projections in 1917. This decomposition of a function is now called the Radon transform. It is a large part of computed topography. Johann Radon did a great deal of work on the Calculus of variations and Measure theory. He also worked on Differential geometry. Differential geometry studies properties of manifolds which depend on being able to do differentiation.
Examples of the properties studied are curvature and torsion for curves and various curvatures for surfaces. MATH!!! MATH!!! MATH!!! MATH!!! MATH!!! MATH!!! MATH!!!

Links The history of mathematics at the University of Vienna traces back to the year of foundation of the University of Vienna, 1365. As a part of the education in the Artistic Faculty , mathematics was, right from the beginning, an integral part of university life in Vienna. As outstanding figure of this early time we must mention , who became later known, and famous, under the name of his origin, Regiomontanus . He was perhaps the leading mathematician of his time. For example, his trigonometric tables went with Christoph Columbus on his trip to the "new world". While there was originally one professor in mathematics, over the centuries the number of professors in mathematics at the University of Vienna grew gradually up to finally three at the end of the 19th century. In this time, precisely in the year 1876, the "Mathematisches Seminar" was founded, not least at the instigation of

The Mathematics of CAT Scans
History of the CAT Scan In 1895, Wilhelm Konrad Rontgen discovered x-rays. These X-rays could be used to produce images of the interior of the human body! Naturally the scientific community was impressed and Rontgen received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1901. Wilhelm K. Rontgen In 1917, a mathematician named Johann Radon worked out the mathematics of reconstructing a function from a set of projections. This decomposition of a function is now called the Radon transform, and it plays a large role in computed tomography. Johann Radon In the early 1960s, the quality of the X ray images being produced were similar to the ones seen by Rontgen at the beginning of the century. At this time, Allan Cormack began to popularize and extend Radon's work. Allan Cormack In the early 1970s, Godfrey Hounsfield directed a project to combine X-ray scanning and digital computer technology. This work gave birth to computed tomography. In 1979, both Alan Cormack and Godfrey Hounsfield received the Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine. Allan Cormack

Thank you and best regards, Bruno Buchberger. POSTDOC AND SENIOR POSTDOC(GROUP LEADER) POSITIONS AT THE johann radon INSTITUTE FOR COMPUTATIONAL
http://www.mathsoc.spb.ru/jobs/ricam
Dear colleagues in the international symbolic computation community, a new research institute for computational mathematics will soon be started in Austria, see announcement below. Under the initiative of my colleague, Professor Heinz Engl, I helped planning this institute. Today I am happy to inform you that Symbolic Computation will be an important area within this new institute. Please help to establish strong activities in the area of Symbolic Computation in this new institute by kindly distributing the announcement below to potential candidates. Thank you and best regards, Bruno Buchberger. - POSTDOC AND SENIOR POSTDOC (GROUP LEADER) POSITIONS AT THE JOHANN RADON INSTITUTE FOR COMPUTATIONAL AND APPLIED MATHEMATICS (RICAM) OF THE AUSTRIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES, AUSTRIA RICAM is a research institute going into operation on January 1, 2003, and will be gradually built up to a total of 25 postdoc positions in five areas: Scientific Computing - Computational Methods for Direct Field Problems (Prof.Ulrich Langer, langer@numa.uni-linz.ac.at) Scientific Computing - Inverse Problems (Prof.Heinz Engl, engl@indmath.uni-linz.ac.at) Symbolic Computation (Prof.Bruno Buchberger, bruno.buchberger@risc.uni-linz.ac.at) Analysis of Partial Differential Equations (Prof.Peter Markowich, peter.markowich@univie.ac.at) Financial Mathematics (Prof.Gerhard Larcher, gerhard.larcher@jku.at; Prof.Walter Schachermayer, wschach@fam.tuwien.ac.at). In addition to ongoing research, which will be partly interdisciplinary between the areas mentioned, there will be an international visitors' program in the form of special semesters on application fields. The institute will be housed on the campus of the Johannes Kepler Universit„t in Linz, a town of about 200.000 on the Danube, very close to the Austrian Alps, and half-way between Vienna and Salzburg. We are looking for PostDocs with a strong interest in one of the fields above, who are also willing to work in an interdiscplinary environment; doctorate in mathematics or a closely related field required. In addition, we are also looking for Senior Postdocs, who could lead a group and would also be expected to attract additional funding; they should have a substantial publication record beyond the doctorate. The working language will be English. The positions are initially for up to three years, one renewal for three more years is possible depending on achievement. Please send applications with personal and scientific data, copies of relevant documents and a statement about scientific interests and achievements to Prof. Heinz W. Engl Director, RICAM Austrian Academy of Sciences c/o Kepler University A-4040 Linz Austria and a copy to the area leader in whose group you want to work. There is no deadline, the announcement remains open until all positions are filled; we expect to be able to fill the first position on March 1, 2003.
