COMMUNICANT MEMBERS, MAY,1750
St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran congregation, familiarly known as the "Blue Church", was the first of that denomination organized within the present limits of Upper Saucon township, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. The land on which the present church stands,(third erected) was warrented to Conrad Walp in January of 1737, and it is claimed that the congregation was organized a few years later. However, in 1745, the Rev. H. M. Muhlenberg was notified that the congregation had erected a church and school-house. These records have been copied exactly as written. ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION SYMBOLS
Plus (+) and minus (-). The plus symbol as an abbreviation for the Latin et (and), though appearing with the downward stroke not quite vertical, was found in a manuscript dated 1417 (Cajori).
The + and - symbols first appeared in print in Mercantile Arithmetic or Behende und hubsche Rechenung auff allen Kauffmanschafft , by Johannes Widmann (born c. 1460), published in Leipzig in 1489. However, they referred not to addition or subtraction or to positive or negative numbers, but to surpluses and deficits in business problems (Cajori vol. 1, page 128).
Cajori says, "There is clear evidence that, as a lecturer at the University of Leipzig, Widmann had studied manuscripts in the Dresden library in which + and - signify operations, some of these having been written as early as 1486." Johnson (page 144) says a series of notes from 1481, annotated by Widmann, contain the + and - symbols, and he asks whether Widman could have copied these symbols from some unknown professor at the University of Leipzig. Johnson also says that a student's notes from one of Widmann's 1486 lectures show the + and - signs.
Giel Vander Hoecke used + and - as symbols of operation in Een sonderlinghe boeck in dye edel conste Arithmetica

Fichte, Johann Gottlieb
Johann Gottlieb Fichte Am 19.

Johann Gottlieb Fichte, 1762 - 1814
Johann Gottlieb Fichte was an influential post-Kantian German philosopher whose teachings on philosophy and theology were discussed and admired by the New England Transcendentalist circle. His Wissenschaftslehre (1795) presents the basis of his philosophy, which extends that of Immanuel Kant by emphasizing the role of the ich , or ego, where Kant spoke of the "thing-in-itself" and that of the nicht-ich , or non-ego, as the existential basis of the objective world. Transcendentalists such as Ralph Waldo Emerson whose early definition of nature clearly derives from Fichte's philosophyencountered Fichte, Friedrich Schelling , and Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel mainly through commentaries written in English by Thomas Carlyle and Samuel Taylor Coleridge Fichte has been written about as follows by Octavius Brooks Frothingham , the first historian of American Transcendentalism
The direction given to philosophy by such a man could not but be decided and bold. His short treatises, all marked by intellectual power, some by glowing eloquence, carried his thoughts beyond the philosophical circle and spread his leading principles far beyond the usual speculative lines. "The Destination of Man," "The Vocation of the Scholar," "The Nature of the Scholar," "The Vocation of Man," "The Characteristics of the Present Age," "The Way towards the Blessed Life," were translated into English, published in the "Catholic Series" of John Chapman, and extensively read. The English reviewers helped to make the author and his ideas known to many readers.

Rahn
A.D. Rahn Family Imogene R. Haslett and Arthur D. Rahn were married in Arkansas City, Ks. on February 28, 1941. They traveled in the Armed Services from one coast to the other during World War II. Arthur served five years in the army, half of those years overseas in Iceland, England, France and Belgium as an enemy-message-interceptor. When peace was declared, Arthur returned home to meet his two-year-old son, Robert, for the first time. The family moved from rural Arkansas City to a farm six miles northwest of Winfield in 1945. They lived on the "old Conner place" on the Walnut River bottom, farming about 500 acres of alfalfa, soya beans, wheat and maise. In addition to Robert, three more children were born: Larry A. in 1946, Phillip B. in 1947, and Judith J. in 1949. The whole family were active members of First Christian Church of Winfield, the Walnut Valley 4-H Club and South Vernon School. Arthur served for years on the district Water Conservation Board. Imogene, who had taught school prior to her marriage, completed her college requirements and then taught First Grade at Udall, Ks. for five years. Upon completing graduate study, she became a Social Worker for S.R.S., first in Coffeyville, KS. and then in Cowley County. She retired in 1985 and has been involved in volunteer church and community projects since that time.

Johann Gottlieb Fichte (1762-1814)
Johann Gottlieb Fichte is one of the major figures in German philosophy in the period between Kant and Hegel. Initially considered one of Kant's most talented followers, Fichte developed his own system of transcendental idealism, the Wissenschaftslehre , which sought to work out in great detail Kant's insight that finite rational beings such as ourselves are to be interpreted in terms of both theoretical and practical reason. Through technical philosophical works and popular writings Fichte exercised great influence over his contemporaries, especially during his years at the University of Jena. His influence waned towards the end of his life, and Hegel's subsequent dominance in German philosophy relegated Fichte to the status of a transitional figure whose thought helped to explain the development of German idealism from Kant's Critical philosophy to Hegel's philosophy of Spirit. Today, however, Fichte is rightly seen as an important philosopher in his own right, as a thinker who carried on the Kantian legacy of transcendental philosophy in a highly original form.

Plus (+) and minus (-). Nicole d' Oresme (1323-1382) may have used a figure which looks like a plus symbol as an abbreviation for the Latin et (meaning "and") in Algorismus proportionum, believed to have been written between 1356 and 1361. The symbol appears in a manuscript of this work believed to have been written in the fourteenth century, but perhaps by a copyist and not Oresme himself. The symbol appears, for example, in the sentence: "Primi numeri sesquiterti sunt .4. et .3., et primi numeri sev termini sesquialtere sunt .3. et .2." [Dic Sonneveld]. The plus symbol as an abbreviation for the Latin et , though appearing with the downward stroke not quite vertical, was found in a manuscript dated 1417 (Cajori).
