But as they pursue unsolved problems, Mathematicians the world over, have invariably found the footprints of one who has already been that way. Mathematical genius Srinivasa Ramanujan. Born on December 22nd, 1887 at Erode in Tamil Nadu, Srinivasa Ramanujan showed no signs of extraordinary talent at school in Kumbakonam. His father was an accounts clerk and the family was far from being moneyed. At 12, Ramanujan happened to lay his hands on S L Linney's Plane Trigonometry.

" Srinivasa Aiyanger Ramanujan!"
by Eric Stodola '00 Germantown Academy Times May 24, 1919
Number Theorist GAT: Are you comfortable? Ramanujan : Yes, thank you. GAT: Tell us about your childhood. Ramanujan GAT: How did you first get interested in mathematics? Ramanujan: In the town high school I found a book called the Synopsis of Elementary Results in Pure Mathematics GAT: How did you further your education after high school? Ramanujan : After high school I was given a scholarship to the Government College in Kumbakonam and entered in 1904. My scholarship was not renewed because those fools did not understand that I had more important things to do than study English. GAT:: What are you trying to say? Ramanujan : Because I devoted so much time to mathematics I failed English class. GAT: :What did you do after you lost the scholarship? Ramanujan: Because of the difficulties associated with having no money I ran away from home to the town of Vizagapatnam and continued work on hypergeomtric series and investiGAT:ed relations between integrals and series. Later, in 1906, I entered Pachaiyappas College in Madras. Once again I neglected my studies other than mathematics and failed. I spent the following year developing my own ideas on mathematics. After working on continued fractions and divergent series, I fell ill in 1908. I then had an operation in from which that took me a long time to recover. In 1909 my mother arranged a marriage for me with a nine year old girl, S Janaki Ammal. However, I did not live with her until she was twelve years old.
