SAINT PETER'S COLLEGE MAA ASSESSMENT PROJECT PROSPECTUS OF THE CASE STUDY The goals of the Saint Peter's College project revolve around assessing the outcomes (in terms of career paths and other relevant factors) that our mathematics majors have experienced and applying the results to strengthen the major and attract more students to the field, noting the need to attract underrepresented groups. Data on mathematics majors and dual majors are being analyzed for the classes of 1978 through the present. The academic tracks within the major that these graduates followed are also being examined. The project also looks at strategies by which the Mathematics Department and the College can support its majors in the classroom, in the residence halls, and in other ways. Feedback from employers of our mathematics graduates will provide additional enlightening evidence of program effectiveness and suggestions for improvement. Embellishing our existing survey of majors will provide firsthand information on how well our programs prepare students for their first position and with the flexibility to adapt to emerging opportunities in the workforce. The project itself offers the Department the opportunity to build on its existing ways for collecting reactions to the major as well as to forge camaraderie among its members in order to improve the departmental offerings and collaborations with other departments.

    O-Ratio
Ramon Llull (Raimundus Lullus) ja Petrus Ramus retoriikan filosofisuudesta
ratio oratio ('puhe', 'merkitys', 'sanat')?

RAMUS REVISITED: THE USES AND LIMITS OF CLASSICAL RHETORIC
    Jane R. Walpole
All that we teach as rhetoric today can be traced, in a more or less straight line, back to Aristotle. His concepts, his schemata, still shape our methods in the composition classroom. But especially since the Renaissance, rhetoric has come to mean more and more the study of the written, rather than the spoken, word. Two parts of Aristotle's five were quickly neglected: memory and delivery. Then in the sixteenth century, Peter Ramus redefined rhetoric by transferring invention and arrangement to dialectics, the study of argumentation. Thus, the sole element of Ramian rhetoric was style. The results of this radical surgery can be seen in the overblown eupheuistic prose of John Lyly, or in Elizabethan rhetoric books with their listings of one hundred and sixty-odd tropes and schemes. Actually, the rhetoric of writing involves not only invention, arrangement, and style. It also includes memory and delivery. Memory is the written word itself, as Plato pointed out in the

291 - The Rhetoric of Theology The Rhetoric of Theology
By Hugh T. Kerr WITH the exception of the guest editorial on the recent Uppsala World Council Assembly, this issue of THEOLOGY TODAY presents in printed form several of the items prepared for the Gallahue Conference on Theology, held at Princeton Theological Seminary, April 17-21, 1968. Two previous issues (April and July) also contained some material from this same conference. Among those participating in the various discussions were: Thomas J. J. Altizer, Peter Berger, Eugene C. Blake, Daniel Callahan, John B. Cobb, Sister Mary Corita, Harvey Cox, Leslie Dewart, James Dittes, Joseph Fletcher, William Hamilton, Seward Hiltner, Paul Lehmann, Martin Marty, Arthur McGill, Jurgen Moltmann, Schubert Ogden, Albert Outler, James A. Pike, J. A. T. Robinson, Stephen Rose, Rosemary Ruether, and Gabriel Vahanian. Although the Gallahue Conference was enthusiastically hailed as a theological event of stellar brilliance, several delegates have later noted that the discussion of papers, and the papers themselves in some instances, left a feeling of disappointment and inconclusiveness. The theme of the Conference was "Next Steps for Church and Theology," and it was assumed, when assignments were made for papers and speakers, that analysis of trends and criticism of positions would give way to imaginative and innovative suggestions for theology tomorrow. Perhaps the expectation was too naive that anyone could possibly know, in these apocalyptic times, what tomorrow's theology would look like. Or it may be that negatively the Conference affirmed that whatever tomorrow will bring, it certainly will be different from today.

    "Kairos"
This e-mail message was posted by Carl Glover to wcenter on April 29, 1998: Dear Friends, Having said that, I want to move on to a point not unrelated to the issues raised above. The most important quality a writing center tutor can have, I think, is a sense of "kairos" (timeliness, appropriateness, the opportune moment, the ability to make the right decision in a moment of crisis, knowing when to speak and when to be silent). When a student arrives for an appointment at the writing center, the tutor must make an immediate decision how best to work with the student seeking help. This is a decision that must be made rather quickly, based on verbal interaction with the student and perhaps a quick gander at the paper. The reason I think a sense of kairos is so important, though, is that I don't believe that any single approach to tutoring works in all situations. That's the beauty of writing center work, the variety of pedagogical techniques that are at our disposal to use according to the needs or our students and the demands of their assignments. Now. of course, we need policies and procedures. How could we function without them? But these policies and procedures ought to be our servants rather than our being their slaves. So while it may be writing center policy not to write on a student's paper, there may be a time when that is the appropriate pedagogical move, given the kairos of the situation. I will trust my sense of kairos in every situation. For me, policies and procedures will be secondary to a sense of the opportune moment.
