An Interpretive History of African
American Education 1950-1990
A Study of African-American Artists
From 1950-1990
Kathy Hendershot and Jennifer Tyler
June 4, 2001 Dr. Beverly Gordon, ED PL 834 Overview
The purpose of this paper is to examine the contributions and struggles of African-American artists from the 1950s through the 1990s. We really didn't know where to begin as our European education, both Catholic and public schools, prepared us only from the perspective of European classical artists. We were briefly exposed to Romare Bearden, but did not have the benefit of delving further into the contributions of African American artists. It is particularly interesting to us, the authors of this paper, that we knew so little about individual African-American artists and their work, yet it is one of the most comprehensive and extensive collections to be found in the world of art.
The next significant historical event to have an impact on the art of African-Americans was the Civil Rights Movement and the assassinations of John and Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr. These events brought about monumental social and political change that affected the nation. African-American artists were expressing these changes through paintings, sculptures, and photographs from their perspective. With this rise in social consciousness and awareness came an opportunity for African-Americans to have a forum to display, get long awaited recognition and have an arena to communicate with and educate other African-Americans about the need to embrace racial pride. "I learned a long time ago that self-dignity and racial pride could be consciously approached through art" (Biggers, Free Within Ourselves, P. 37).

One of the many white Americans who expressed his interest in the artistic achievements of black Americans during the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920's, was Caucasion real estate developer, William E. Harmon (1862-1928). In 1922 he established the Harmon Foundation in New York City to recognize African American achievements, not only in the fine arts but also in business, education, farming, literature, music, race relations, religious service and science. In 1944 the Harmon Foundation, then under the direction of Mary Beattie Brady, organized an exhibition "Portraits of Outstanding Americans of Negro Origin," with the express goal of reversing racial intolerance, ignorance and bigotry by illustrating the accomplishments of contemporary African Americans. Including twenty-three portraits created by both a black and a white artistLaura Wheeler Waring (1887-1948) and Betsy Graves Reyneau (1888-1964)the exhibition premiered at the Smithsonian Institution on May 2 and then travelled around the United States for the next ten years. Other portraits were added to the tour during that time. Following the Supreme Court's 1954 ruling abolishing legal segregation, the tour was discontinued on the Harmon Foundation's assumption that racial tolerance and understanding had been successfully attained. Although it is evident today that the foundation's exhibition did not eradicate racial fears and tension in America, it did successfully expose and improve the perception and recognition of African Americans' contribution to this nation.
