08 November 2001 A new centre trains its eyes on Matteo Ricci, cross-cultural studies CityU's Centre for Cross-Cultural Studies (CCS), two years in preparation, finally made its official debut on 12 October. World-renowned sinologist and author of modern Chinese studies, Jonathan Spence , Sterling Professor of History at Yale University , delivered a public lecture on "The Image of China in the West: Accident or Design?"to a packed audience at the Wei Hing Theatre. "No other country or culture has absorbed so much energy, so consistently, in the Western world as China," said Professor Spence, emphasizing the richness of the theme of China in the West in the past 400 years, particularly since the arrival of Matteo Ricci, a Jesuit priest, in Beijing in 1601. The need for cross-cultural communication and understanding, especially in the light of developments after 11 September, was echoed by Professor H K Chang , CityU President, and Professor Matthew Chen , Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences at the opening ceremony. Cross-cultural studies were more important than ever, Monsieur

The Jesuit Mission:
Matteo Ricci "Probably no European name of past centuries is so well known in
China as that of [Matteo Ricci]." In 1552, Matteo Ricci was born in Macerata, in central Italy to a noble family. His father, Giovanni Battista, was a pharmacist and devoted his life to public affairs once serving as Marcerata's governor. His mother, Giovanna Angiolelli, was known for her piety. Matteo was the oldest child in the family and learned primarily at home. On August 15, 1571, Matteo Ricci decided to enter into the Jesuit order against his father's wishes. Matteo Ricci entered the order and soon after devoted himself to scientific research and also the exploration of the new world. He studied science with mathematician Christopher Clavius. Later, he was assigned to work in the China mission arriving in the Far East in 1583. Known as Li Madou to the Chinese, Ricci accomplished many tasks in his twenty-seven years of living in China as a missionary. In the field of math, he was able to translate Christopher Clavius' works in Geometrica Practica and Trigonometrica bringing western mathematics and different trigonometric and astronomical instruments to China. Furthermore, at one point, he became the court mathematician in Beijing. In addition to his mathematical achievements, he was able publish the first maps of China made available for the West. He was also able to translate the first six books of the Euclid into Chinese.

http://www.china.org.cn/english/features/beijing/31024.htm
The Tomb of Matteo Ricci The tomb of the Jesuit missionary Matteo Ricci stands behind the French Church at 12 Maweigou (Horsetail Ditch) Road in the Fuchengmen district. Ricci died in Beijing in June 1610 at the age of 58. According to the code of the Ming Dynasty, foreigners who died in China had to be buried in Macao. The Jesuits made a special plea to the court, requesting a burial plot in Beijing in view of Ricci’ s contributions to China. Emperor Wanli of the Ming Dynasty granted his permission and designated a Buddhist temple, which had been appropriated from a court eunuch for the purpose. In October of 1610, the Jesuit Father’ s remains were transferred to the tomb. Constructed of square bricks and surrounded by a brick wall, the tomb is entered through a decorative iron latticework gate. A pair of carved Ming stone vases still stands before the tomb, and a stone tiger from the same period stands outside the gate. Matteo Ricci was born in 1552 of a noble Italian family. He first came to China in 1582 after studying the Chinese language in Macao. He worked for a period in Zhaoqing, then the capital of Guangdong Province, and a number of other places before receiving permission to enter Beijing in 1601. Upon his arrival at eh capital, Ricci presented Emperor Wanli with maps of foreign countries, a chiming clock and other gifts, which induced the emperor to permit Ricci to carry on missionary work in Beijing, and to approve the building of the Southern Cathedral (Nantang), the first Catholic church in the city, near Xuanwumen.

Matteo Ricci

Insegnamenti di Giovanni Paolo II , II, vol. V/3, 1982, Libreria Editrice Vaticana, 1982, 923-925).

MENSAGEM DO SANTO PADRE
POR OCASIO DO IV CENTENÁRIO DA CHEGADA
DO PADRE MATTEO RICCI A PEQUIM
