Another advantage of a mathematical statement is that it is so definite that it might be definitely wrong; and if it is found to be wrong, there is a plenteous choice of amendments ready in the mathematicians' stock of formulae. Some verbal statements have not this merit; they are so vague that they could hardly be wrong, and are correspondingly useless.

LEWIS GARDINER richardson lewis Gardiner Richardson, secretary and generalmanager of the New Haven Screw Company, was born in Hartford
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ctnhvbio/Richardson_Lewis.html
LEWIS GARDINER RICHARDSON Lewis Gardiner Richardson, secretary and general manager of the New Haven Screw Company, was born in Hartford, Connecticut, September 3, 1878, and his parents, James W. and Nancy (Logan) Richardson, were also natives of this state, representing prominent families that through generations have been connected with New England. The father was of English descent and the mother of Scotch lineage, the former born in Coventry, Connecticut and the latter in Thompsonville, Connecticut. James W. Richardson became well known as a carpenter and joiner and for many years was identified with the building interests of Hartford, where he passed away in 1896, at the age of sixty-five. His wife was reared and educated in Hartford and there their marriage was celebrated. She passed away in 1880.
On the 2d of July, 1913, Mr. Richardson was married to Miss Bertha Prior, of Hartford, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Prior. In politics he is an independent republican but without desire or time for public office. He belongs to the Automobile Club and is not unappreciative of the social amenities of life, but his business has constantly made great demands upon his time and energies and through close application, determined purpose and laudable ambition he has advanced until he now ranks with the prominent and repre-sentative manufacturers of New Haven. Lewis Fry RICHARDSON (1881 - 1953)
Weather Prediction by Numerical Process By Lewis F. Richardson Published by Cambridge University Press, London, 1922 PREFACE The process of forecasting, which has been carried on in London for many years, may be typified by one of its latest developments, namely Col. E. Gold's Index of Weather Maps. It would be difficult to imagine anything more immediately practical. The observing stations telegraph the elements of present weather. At the head office these particulars are set in their places upon a large-scale map. The index then enables the forecaster to find a number of previous maps which resemble the present one. The forecast is based on the supposition that what the atmosphere did then, it will do again now. There is no troublesome calculation, with its possibilities of theoretical or arithmetical error. The past history of the atmosphere is used, so to speak, as a full-scale working model of its present self. Butone may reflectthe Nautical Almanac

Hilger, Boston, 1985, 309 pages We are all in the debt of any active researcher who takes time out to explain to the public what his profession is about. In The Forgiving Air , Richard Somerville, who is director of climate research at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, describes the considerations that go into scientific weather and climate prediction in a way that is accessible to anyone interested in the subject in a general way, from the high school level up. The book is a good read, and there is no mathematics in it other than the powers of ten. Somerville looks at major meteorological phenomena: The greenhouse effect, the ozone hole, acid rain, reflectivity of ice caps are emphasized. A few selected feedback loops, positive (bad) and negative (good), are discussed in some detail. More carbon dioxide leads to more atmospheric water vapor, which leads to higher temperatures. Clouds—how do they feed back? Do they heat or cool? On average, they cool. But if CO levels were doubled, cloud formations would change, leading to positive feedback; the decrease in ice levels amplifies warming.
