Esquemelin and the Sieur Raveneau de Lussan
A Seminal Work of Americana - Rare Issue of 1741 Esquemeling, John
Dublin Printed for Edward Exshaw 1741 2 volumes. The Fifth edition in English . With engraved views and maps, two of them folding. 12 mo, full period mottled calf, the spines with raised bands blind ruled, red morocco lettering labels gilt. 5 l., 302, plates and maps; title, 322, index 8 l., 2 l. ads A handsome copy of this very scarce item, very crisp and clean internally, unsophisticated and without any repairs but for an edging to one map. RARE EARLY PRINTING OF THE CLASSIC ACCOUNT OF THE BUCCANEERS. The plate count suggests further that this may be a even more rare variant. Sabin lists no plates.
"Perhaps no book in any language was ever the parent of so many imitations, and the source of so many fictions as this" (Sabin). Here are the exploits of Henry Morgan, who sacked Panama and absconded without dividing the bootya transgression of the pirate's honor that Esquemeling could not applaud; here also the vicious Francis L'Ollonois, who tore out the hearts from his still-living victims and ate them; here are countless tortures and robberies, raids and rampages, as related by a reliable witness. For Esquemeling was himself a pirate: he had been sold into slavery in the West Indian plantations, beaten, tortured, and nearly starved to death, and "so I determined, not knowing how to get any living, to enter into the order of the pirates or robbers of the sea." His career lasted from 1666 until he saw the error of his ways and withdrew from the profession in 1672.

All the night past we had a fresh wind. But in the morning, from top-mast head, we descried a hummock of land. In the evening we saw it again. We found afterwards that what we had seen was the westernmost island of Juan Fernandez; which is nothing but a mere rock, there being no riding, nor scarce landing, near to it. Friday, December 24th.

Adult Training: A large number of member companies have benefited from recruiting Adult Trainees from such as the "Job Training Scheme", "Employment Training", and "Training for Work" - tapping into a potential source of transferable skills, while providing read opportunities with training. METCOM is a registered Training Provider for both "Training at Work" and the Government's latest programme "New Deal", which offers companies an opportunity to access up to £75 per week subsidy towards a trainee's wages costs, plus a contribution of £750 towards training costs.
Contact: Scotland Pam Ringrose England John Gould
Assessment Training: Today's Scottish/National Vocational Qualifications are founded on competence-based Standards, assessed in the workplace. Consequently, the demand for Assessor's Training in TDLB units D32 and D33, and the techniques for Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) is growing rapidly. As well as employing a national team of qualified Assessors covering a range of occupational skills, METCOM also provides Training Courses and Workshops which enable companies to train and develop their own staff, who have a requirement to assess competence.
