Equitation School
The Birth of the Equitation School
The Equitation School has been at the forefront of Irish equestrianism for the last 76 years, both at home and abroad. Since their inception Irish Army riders have been the backbone of Irish Show jumping and Event Teams.
Army riders have represented Ireland at Olympic, World and European Championship level in Show jumping and Three-Day Eventing. With wins in competitions such as the Hickstead Derby (on three occasions), Hickstead Speed Derby (on three occasions), Grand Prix Dublin, Grand Prix Helsinki, Millstreet Derby, Monterey Derby to name but a few, Army riders on Irish bred horses have indeed been a powerful force in advertising and promoting the sale of Irish horses abroad. Its success in achieving this objective can be established by reviewing the impressive record of Irish horses competing for other Nations over the years.
The formation of the army equitation School came about very quickly in 1926 following contact between Judge Wylie of the RDS, Col Hogan (Quartermaster General), and the then head of the new Free State, President William T. Cosgrave. Through a miracle of farsighted initiative, the funding was found to have Ireland field teams for international show jumping competitions. Its purpose - to advertise the new State and to promote the Irish Horse, which in the long run would rebound to the benefit of farmer breeders around the country.

State Commissioner 1955 - 1960
A movement with a purpose!
Since 1990, some terms have been altered - District Commissioners are now 'district leaders'. Local Associations are now 'girl guides support groups'. After a five year term for State Commissioners was approved, Mrs. Gresham completed her nine year term and Mrs. Sylvia Daphne Ringrose was elected to the office. Mrs. Ringrose (nee Pratt) was no stranger to Queensland guiding. She joined the Movement in Ipswich in 1920, eventually becoming warranted captain of the Ipswich Company in June, 1927. After marriage, she later resumed guiding as a commissioner in the Bardon, Toowong, Milton and Rainworth districts. She was appointed Commissioners' Representative on the Board of Management of the Guide Centre in 1947, to State Council in 1948 and later to the State Executive Committee. On 1st January 1955, Mrs. Ringrose took office as State Commissioner and served in that capacity for five years. Ithaca Division was renamed Sylvia Ringrose Division in her honour in 1958.

Chris Ringrose Productivity: Literary Value and the Curriculum
'Cultural history would refuse nothing' (Catherine Belsey)
'As we all know, English is dead' (Gary Day) Modern literary studies have always been implicated in questions of literary value. The university curriculum at mid-century was seen primarily in terms of selected texts from literary history; something has to be taught, after all, and one way of radically assessing university English was to revalue the syllabus. Ian MacKillop and Richard Storer's archaeology among F. R. Leavis's papers reinforces if anything our sense of his magisterial approach, dictating a nuanced curriculum even to those who might be on their way to study at Downing College, and repeating the process in his undergraduate tutorials (1995: 53-70). The American poet and critic Yvor Winters acted similarly in presenting his history of the lyric poem Forms of Discovery : there were surprising apotheoses (such as Frederick Goddard Tuckerman and Robert Bridges) and summary dismissals: I have had neither the time nor the inclination in this book or previously to write at length of the poets who have temporarily, from decade to decade, had great reputations, some of whom may still have them: John Masefield, Alfred Noyes, Edgar Lee Masters, Carl Sandburg, Vachel Lindsay, Amy Lowell, Elinor Wylie, Edna St Vincent Millay, e. e. cummings, Archibald McLeish, Dylan Thomas, W. H. Auden, Robert Lowell, Richard Wilbur. The learned scholar who would like to devote a history to these poets has my blessing.
