Samuel Johnson by Sir S. C. Roberts Chapter I SAMUEL Johnson was born at Lichfield on 18 September 1709 He died in London on 13 December 1784, and was buried in Westminster Abbey. SAMUEL JOHNSON is more vivid to us in a book written by another man than in any of the books that he wrote himself. Such is the penalty of being the subject of the greatest biography in the language, with the further result that many readers tend to separate Johnson the writer from Johnson the man as displayed by Boswell. USS Samuel B. Roberts , a 1745-ton John C. Butler class destroyer escort, was built at Houston, Texas. Commissioned in April 1944, she briefly operated in the western Atlantic before transferring to the Pacific. After escort duties in mid-Pacific, Samuel B. Roberts supported the Leyte invasion as part of an escort carrier task force. On 25 October 1944, during the Battle off Samar, she was lost while agressively fighting a vastly superior Japanese battleship and cruiser assault, an action that was instrumental in saving most of her task force and defeating the Japanese counter-offensive against the Leyte invasion. Samuel Roberts was born in Wales in 1833. Hearing news of the 1859 Cariboo gold rush, Samuel and his brothers left Wales for North America. Though his passage was paid to New Caledonia (now British Columbia), Samuel and his fellow passengers found themselves stranded in New York City. After selling a chest of tools Samuel was able to make his way to Pittsburgh and find work in the coal mines. Eventually, he traveled to the Mississippi and headed down river to New Orleans. This was a difficult journey, as the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861 had brought river traffic to a virtual halt. Soon after his arrival in New Orleans, Samuel sailed to the Isthmus of Panama and walked overland to the west coast of Mexico. He then sailed to Victoria by way of San Francisco. Arriving in 1862, the 29 year old spent only a short time in Victoria before paddling his canoe to Yale. Along with other gold seekers, Samuel relayed his supplies over the 480 mile Cariboo trail to Barkerville. During the journey Samuel joined forces with Henry Brackman. Together they made their strike and secured shares in claims on the famous Williams and Lightning Creeks. Samuel labored for ten summers in Barkerville and worked in the coal mines in Nanaimo during the winter months. It was also in Nanaimo that he met his bride, Agnes Gough. Agnes's parents had arrived at Esquimalt from England on November 23, 1854 aboard the Princess Royal along with twenty-three other families. At Esquimalt the families transferred to the ships Beaver and Recovery which arrived in Nanaimo four days later. Agnes was about 15 years old at the time of her marriage to Samuel. They were married in Victoria's Wesleyan Church on December 16, 1871. It is rumoured that they traveled to Victoria by canoe.

'I send you these few lines to comfort you; I should have sent you some money before, but I hope, my dear child, you will forgive me, as you hope to be forgiven in heaven. There you will find a better father than you have found in me. Be as happy as you can; you are going to happiness, and leave me behind to be miserable. I hope you will die happy, because you know you are innocent. Thou art now going, I shall soon follow thee. I hope you will meet your dear mother in heaven. As we shall soon part in this world, may my prayers be heard for you in heaven!

The Life of samuel roberts*. samuel roberts of Oak Avenue can claimthe distinction of being one of the oldest men in Lawrence County.

The Life of Samuel Roberts*
The first persons he has any recollection of in New Castle were Joseph Boyd, the postmaster and storekeeper, John Wilson, and Samuel McCleary, storekeepers, and later John Pearson, who some years after started a store, Mr. Carman, a tailor, Jesse DuShane and a Mr. Hawthorn, tavern keepers, Squire White (Crawford White) who kept a small grist mill and Rev. Sample, a Presbyterian minister. Dr. Pollock owned a farm in what is now South New Castle, but was then little else than timber land and bramble brush and swamp grass. The doctor was afterwards one of the canal commissioners. In 1813 when only 7 years of age, a squad of soldiers who were returning from the war of 1812, or perhaps going, saw Sammy on the road, and took after him, telling him they were going to take him to Lake Erie to fight the English and scared him so badly that he ran home crying. He first went to school in a little log schoolhouse to a teacher named McJunkin who was very cross. In 1815 his father bought a farm on Big Run near Frew's mill in Shenango township and moved to it where he died in 1855, at the age of 91 years. His mother died in 1840, ages 75 years. His father's family consisted of ten children, all of whom are dead except himself.

Commentary Children Researcher List Register Report ... Home I (Marty Grant) am a 2nd cousin, 9 times removed of Samuel Roberts, assuming that various weak connections can be proven. Special thanks to Dr. Merrit E. Roberts of Lompoc, CA for information shared on this family in his book "Roberts-Allen Families", 1985. He has data in his book on Samuel Roberts, that I won't repeat here, except what I can find myself in the various records. Although I think his book was excellent, and a worthwhile addition to my library, I did find much in it that was based on various assumptions, some of which I totally disagree with, so I'm probably going to contradict much of what he wrote on the early Roberts families. I do this with no disrespect towards Dr. Roberts, but only for the sake of presenting evidence that he may not have had access to, or in presenting my own alternate interpretations of certain data. When possible (and practical) I'll present our cases side by side if they differ significantly, so the reader can decide which is more likely, or possibly come up with a third point of view. Samuel Roberts was born before ca 1729, presumably in Craven Precinct, NC. I base this birth date on his first found record which was dated 1750 when he sold land to his brother

Samuel Watson (1825) and Frances Page and Elizabeth Roberts and Dora V. Price of Marion Co, SC
Commentary Children Researcher List Register Report ... Home I (Marty Grant) am not related to Samuel Watson as far as I know. Samuel Watson was born 6 Oct 1825 per his parents Family Bible. He was born in Marion District, SC. Samuel is a proven son of Isham Watson and Mary Hayes , as named in the family bible. In 1830, Samuel seems to be home with his parents. (aged "under 5", born ca 1825/30). He still seems to be home in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30). Samuel Watson married Frances Page sometime just before 1850, presumably in Marion District. Their 1850 census entry shows them with no children, so they probably hadn't been married too long. Frances was a daughter of William and Mary (-) Page as proven by Equity records for William Page. Sellers also mentioned that Samuel's first wife was a "Miss Page". Samuel and Frances were listed on the 1850 census in Marion District.

Bookbinding and the Conservation of Books
A Dictionary of Descriptive Terminology
Mearne, Samuel ( 1624-1683 )
An English publisher, bookseller, and bookbinder, about whom little definitive knowledge exists. While Mearne's name is associated with the splendid COTTAGE STYLE , some authorities have expressed doubts that he actually bound any books himself, but rather that the famous Mearne bindings were executed by the Dutch bookbinder Suckerman, and that Mearne was a publisher, not a bookbinder. It has been established, however, that Mearne's second apprenticeship was with Jeremy Arnold, a bookbinder and it is therefore argued that he must have learned the craft, the question being how many books he actually bound. It is probably unlikely that he would have taken the time to bind books following the Restoration, because he quickly became an important figure in the book trade. Mearne acquired the posts of Stationer and Bookseller to the King, and thereafter became Master of the Stationers' Company. It is probably reasonable to assume, however, that, considering his knowledge of bookbinding, he would have continued to take an interest in the work of his bindery. Regardless of its origin. the cottage style came to be regarded as distinctively English, and attained a popularity which endured with minor variations until the first quarter of the 19th century, thus lasting for a longer period than any other style of book decoration.
