Research shows that women are actually discouraged by teachers, counselors, and parents to get involved in mathematics. From 600 BCE, women were told that they could not handle the effort and brain power that mathematics required. Many mathematicians and researchers note that women need to be more enthusiastic about math from the time they enter school. There are lots of ideas on how to change this stereotype. Studies show that females are taught differently throughout school. Teachers call on females less than males and expect males to ask questions more. Male students are given detailed instructions of how to do certain tasks, while females are helped by the teacher to complete the assignment. Females need more women role models in mathematics to encourage them in the subject area. There are quite a few women mathematicians , but I would like to discuss three very important women that I particularly think are worth noting. I would also like to display this information for those who will read this because many people couldn’t name a female mathematician if their life counted on it.

Information for Prospective Students Mathematics and Statistics, American University GENDER ISSUES In the past few decades, the participation by women in the mathematical sciences has increased dramatically. Although the thought now seems incredibly absurd, up to the middle of the century it was commonly held by the educational establishment that women were incapable of mathematical thought. Today, while roughly equal numbers of male and female students complete math majors in college, there is still a large gender gap at the graduate level. And while there are now many more women numbered among the ranks of mathematics professors at colleges and universities, the most senior positions continue to be dominated by males.
