Ambrose Rogers Memorial Tournament Final
The Ambrose Rogers Memorial Tournament organised by Longstone GAC concluded recently when Kilcoo played Mayobridge in the final match and won on a scoreline of 1-13 to 1-9.
Ambrose Rogers was a former Down county player who died a few years back at a very young age. He was one of the great personalities on the Down and Ulster GAA scene, and this annual tournament is a fitting tribute to his memory.

Ambrose Rogers an appreciation By Noel Doran DOWN LEGEND...Ambrose Rogers scoring a point against Monaghan in his Down heyday
AMBROSE Rogers was born to play for Down. He came from a family which is steeped in football and from an area which remains one of the heartlands of the GAA.
Ambrose one of the many unique factors about him was that no one, friend or foe, ever referred to him by anything other than his Christian name was a quite simply a remarkable footballer.
We came from rival clubs in the same parish and were roughly the same age, but, from the first time I came across him at U13 level, it was plain that he was in a different league than the rest of us.
His familiar and formidable physique had not developed at that stage, but all the other skills the fielding ability, the trademark sidestep and the astonishing left foot were present.
My father, who knows of these matters, always told me that Ambrose had the stride of an All Ireland winner, and he was right.
He progressed over the years through the county minors, making a central contribution to the team which won an All-Ireland in 1977, before his inevitable arrival on the senior stage.

John Rogers was educated at Oxford and Cambridge, while still a i
young man, for conscience sake, went to Antwerp in Brabaugh,
serving several years as chaplain to the English Merchants
Adventurers. Here he formed a friendship with William Tyndale,
who for the hatred he bore to Papish superstitions and idolatry, and the love he had for true religion, had forsaken his native country. Conferring withhim on the scriptures, he came to a great knowledge of theGospel, insomuch as to cast off the heavy yoke of Popery, and to assist in the translation of the bible into the English and was carried to completion by John Rogers alone under the assumed name of Thomas Matthew. After marrying

behind James P. Rogers Square This is the first in a series about people who have grown up near the site of the new Labouré Center reflecting on their South Boston memories, as part of the Labouré Center's "Buy-a-Brick" campaign to build a "walk of memories".
Jim Connolly, attending the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Labouré Center at the corner of Broadway and D Street, noticed the commemorative plaque marking the square and recognized with a start that the corner was named for his uncle, Jimmy Rogers, a casualty of World War II.
"There I was watching the groundbreaking ceremony, and behind Cardinal Law, I saw the sign commemorating the square to my Uncle Jim. I truly had forgotten that it was there. Seeing it brought me back to my family's roots, which all start in this country near the D Street projects," said Connolly, a board member of the Labouré Center and vice-president of Gillette.

Ambrose Rogers was educated at Berkhamsted School in Hertfordshire, England about 45 km northwest of London. From there he went to University College, London and Birkbeck College, London and was awarded his B.Sc. from the University of London in 1941. However, these were the years of World War II and Rogers did war work as an Experimental Officer with the Ministry of Supply from 1940 until the end of the war in 1945. Other mathematicians such as Kendall also held such posts with the Ministry of Supply. After the war ended Rogers returned to his mathematical studies. He was appointed a lecturer in mathematics at University College, London in 1946 and worked for his doctorate while lecturing at the College. He was awarded a Ph.D. in 1949 and a D.Sc. in 1952 having worked at this time with Davenport and publishing two joint papers with him in 1950. At University College, Rogers was promoted to reader before he moved to Birmingham in 1954 as the Professor of Pure Mathematics at Birmingham University. After four years in Birmingham, Rogers returned to London, this time as the Astor Professor of Mathematics at University College. He succeeded Harold

Well over fifty years in fact. But Longstone Emmets finally made it. At St Patrick Park, Newcastle, the red-shirted side picked up their first major trophy in their half century plus of existence, when they beat Saval in the Intermediate Championship final.
There were joyous scenes after the game with many fans, mentors and players emotional. Manager PJ McGee, a man who guided Rostrevor to Senior Championship honours four years ago, was one of these. He said: “I’m delighted for Longstone. This victory means so much to the club. I’m so pleased. Another who was overjoyed was Bronagh Rogers - wife of the late Stone legend, Ambrose - and a lady who looks after the medicinal needs of the players.
Bronagh, who has been attached to the club for over 18 years and whose son Ambrose plays on the team, could scarcely look as the watch ticked down the final exciting moments. S
