Phone: 217-244-3504 Research Interests: Diet, climate, environment and habitat reconstruction with stable carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and strontium isotope ratios of human and other animal bones, teeth and soft tissues. We use stable isotopes as a tool to evaluate the effects of dietary adaptations and climate change on the natural and cultural evolutionary history of humans from their origin to the present. Controlled diet experiments with rats were performed using diets synthesized from purified macronutrients (proteins, carbohydrates and lipids), with different stable carbon isotope ratios for proteins versus non-proteins. Consumer tissue protein carbon isotopic analysis shows that neosynthesis of non-essential amino acids is far less than expected from the standard model of essential versus non-essential amino acids, even on very low-protein diets. We plan to investigate this further by compound-specific isotopic analysis of amino acids. Our current research on prehistoric human diets includes the evolution of millet agriculture during the Neolithic in China, maize agriculture in eastern North America, animal husbandry and farming in eastern and southern Africa, and marine and terrestrial diets in Peru and Micronesia.

Historian Stephen Ambrose Dead at 66 National Geographic News
    October 15, 2002
Stephen E. Ambrose, one of a handful of historians who have become best-selling authors, died of lung cancer Sunday, October 13th in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. Perhaps best known for his books on Lewis and Clark and World War II, Ambrose also founded the National D-Day Museum and the Eisenhower Center for American Studies at the University of New Orleans. During his career, much of which he spent as a professor at the University of New Orleans, he wrote or edited more than 35 books. Ambrose was an Explorer-in-Residence for the National Geographic Society. For him, teaching and writing were two sides of the same coin.

Queensland Raceway, Qld Practice and Qualifying 13th September 2002 Vip Queensland 500 Fords dashing in Practice With the paperclip being home turf for many of the Ford teams, put-of-towners were expected to be behind the eight ball. The Stone Brothers cars stamped their authority and immediately had the wood on the rest to put Ambrose and Besnard first and second fastest. But there were many surprises to come from practice. Who would have bet that Skaife would miss qualifying for the top fifteen shootout? Also missed from the shootout was Lowndes, another unexpected result. Not so unexpectedly, both Shell cars also missed out. Craig Baird and team Brock surprised themselves and found themselves eight fastest having just installed their new high performance engine. Another surprise was Andy Priaulx who took position 13 in the second K-Mart car.
