The latter are divided into logic, set theory, topology, functional analysis, classical analysis, differential equations, differential geometry, and applied mathematics. The choice is confined to those mathematicians who passed away. World War II was disastrous for Polish mathematics in every respect. Over 25 research mathematicians were shot or died in concentration camps or prisons. Victims included in this poster are marked by an asterisk. A number of others dispersed by the war did not return to Poland. Warsaw School of Mathematics The term Warsaw School of Mathematics is used to describe a group of mathematicians working in logic, set theory, point-set topology and real functions in the 1920's and 1930's. Their journal was Fundamenta Mathematicae (founded in 1920),the first specialized mathematical journal in the world. Wac³aw Sierpinski Theory of sets (particularly axiom of choice and continuum hypothesis), point-set topology, descriptive set theory, real functions, number theory. Members of this school were: Wac³aw Sierpinski, Kazimierz Kuratowski, Edward Marczewski, Bronis³aw Knaster, Zygmunt Janiszewski, Stefan Mazurkiewicz, Stanis³aw Saks, Karol Borsuk, Roman Sikorski Members of the Warsaw topology group who emigrated in the 1930's: Nachman Aronszajn (1907-1980) and Samuel Eilenberg (now in New York). The group of logicians in Warsaw also included Stanislaw Lesniewski (1886-1939), Adolf Lindenbaum (1904-1942), and Alfred Tarski (since 1942 in Berkeley). Here in 1933 Tarski published his celebrated theorem on the undefinability of the notion of truth. Jan £ukasiewicz and Andrzej Mostowski belonged also to this group. Fourier analysis was developed in Warsaw by Aleksander Rajchman and Antoni Zygmund (1900-1992). The latter moved to the Uniwesity of Vilna (founded 1578) where he led an analysis group in the 1930's. During the war he settled in the USA. Józef Marcinkiewicz, Otton M. Nikodym and Jerzy Sp³awa-Neyman were other members of this group.

MAT 528 Complex Variables II Additional Reading Although Lang's text is generally well-liked, there are deficiencies , and it's always a good idea to read other authors for breadth. The following list is not meant to be comprehensive, but will serve to point up some differences in viewpoint to the subject. References: Reinhold Remmert, Theory of Complex Functions , Springer-Verlag Graduate Texts in Mathematics #122, New York, 1991. This book is a translation of the second edition of Funktionentheorie I , Grundwissen Mathematik 5, Springer-Verlag, 1989 by the same author. It's worth reading just for the copious historical notes, but the approach to the classical transcendental functions, especially Eisenstein's theory of the trigonometric functions, is also quite appealing. John B. Conway, Functions of One Complex Variable I , (2nd ed.) Springer-Verlag Graduate Texts in Mathematics #11, New York, 1978. Conway's book is widely used; I've taught MAT 528 from it previously myself. Although Conway omits elliptic functions, he covers the Picard theorems in more detail than Lang, and also covers Runge's theorem, which Lang omits. Conway's approach to contour integration is one of the most general I've seen: the use of Riemann-Stieljes integrals makes his development somewhat more intricate, but with a pay-off of weaker hypotheses for many of his results.
