I was poaching a whole salmon in its skin. When I checked to see if it was cooked, I saw that the flesh had turned liquid. I returned it to the butcher. He said that 2 out of the 10 cases of salmon were like that. Normally, they notice the problem when the salmon is bought. He said it is a parasite. Do you know which one? These salmon are farmed. The butcher tells me even wild salmon have this parasite. Could anyone tell us more about this problem? Is it a new problem? Or one that has grown rapidly in recent years? Maybe like the incidence of anisakid parasites that folks in Seattle were studying? Peter Howgate Wrote: Very likely due to severe infestation by the protozoan parasite Hennugya salminicola. It secretes a proteolytic enzyme which dissolves flesh. Similar to the myxosporidium parasites which cause milky hake. The infestation is typically seen in the raw flesh as pale circular or oval patches which have a thick creamy texture when pressed. The patches are very obvious when the flesh is smoked. I have seen it in Pacific salmon imported into the UK, but I do not recall reading or hearing of any incidence in Atlantic salmon. Peter Howgate

    GEORGE
    SALMON
The most distinguished of Mac Cullagh's students was George Salmon, also a geometer, whose books on conics sections and on geometry of three dimensions were republished in very many editions and in several languages, and remained in use well into the present century. As well as making significant original contributions in geometry Salmon was actively involved with the English mathematicians Arthur Cayley and J.J. Sylvester in pioneering work in algebra based on the study of invariants under linear transformations. It was through his book Lessons Introductory to the Modern Higher Algebra that his work became widely known. Salmon could carry through the most formidable of calculations and yet his books, the successive editions of which incorporated new and often original results, were models of clarity and elegance. Writing of these books the mathematician Felix Klein said These books are like delightful and instructive walks through forests, fields and gardens, in which the guide points out now this beauty, now that strange phenomenon, without forcing everything together into a rigid system ... We all grew up in these flower gardens; here we gathered the basic knowledge on which we were later to build.'

In April 1983 photocopies of typescripts of a diary, journal, and letter were added to the collection. In August 1994 the papers were reprocessed by Ms. Nielsen.
    BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Born June 15, 1836, in Kittanning, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, and educated in the public schools of Freeport and Slate Lick, George Laird Shoup moved to Galesburg, Illinois with his father in 1852. In 1859 he joined the gold rush to Pike's Peak, Colorado, becoming a prospector, miner, and merchant. When the Civil War broke out he enlisted in an independent company of scouts and was engaged in scouting and detached service against Indians in Colorado, Indian Territory and New Mexico. In December of 1861 he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Colorado Cavalry and was promoted to first lieutenant in February of 1862. In the spring of that year he was in command of artillery at Fort Union, New Mexico and was involved in numerous skirmishes with Indians. In September of 1864 he was commissioned a Colonel in the Third Colorado Cavalry and commanded the regiment at the battle of Sand Creek, Colorado. He was honorably discharged from the military in December of 1864.

First, participation was the highest in years as ten people completed all stages and ten others competed as single day participants. Second, in a quest for snow-covered trails in a nearly snowless year lead club members to new race venues such as the Chena River at the Nordale Road bridge. Third, the race had a different leader on each day before George Salmon finished a mere 26 seconds ahead of Mike Malvick and 42 seconds ahead of Jim Herriges after nearly two hours of racing. Thanks to ASPA sponsors Alaska Feed Company, All Weather Sports, Beaver Sports, 49er Feed Distributors, Play It Again Sports , and Mountain Sports , who provided the individual day prizes, overall prizes, and participation prizes for all competitors. Many thanks are also due to the many volunteers who helped make the races happen. They were George and Cindy Salmon (Race Directors)

Landlock salmon, lakers, bass at Lake George
    New York fishing map feature
    By Manny Luftglass
    Fishing and Hunting News
  • Check out our newest feature: Interactive fishing maps! The lake ranges down to 200 feet in several areas and at this depth, lake trout is king. If you want to fish shallower, try just below the surface or off inlet mouths for landlocked salmon. The natural bait on Lake George is comprised of two separate and distinct fish: smelt and ciscoes. The cisco is really a lake whitefish. Without doubt, there are also countless golden shiners in Lake George, if only because so many anglers drop their leftover shiners overboard at the end of the day. Smelt come into the lake after their spawning run and, at times, the lake really is filled with them. But it is illegal to use or even have any live smelt in your possession on Lake George. Target either lake trout, landlocked salmon or bass on New York's Lake George.
