UPDATED: 5-4-2001 The NATIVE BOYS
This Watts group began as The Mellotears, but when they made their first single for Modern Records, owner Jules Bihari changed their name to The Native Boys. Freddie Romain and Vince Weaver were the primariy leads, backed up by George Le Brune, bass singer Edward "Sack" Saunders and Charles Mathis. Harry Rosemond was a member on the Modern sides, but he left before they signd with Jake Porter's Combo label. Danny Kristian (real name Arthur Murray) may have been with the group at the very end of their Combo period. Kristian and Romain went to Lee Rupe's Ebb Records in early 1957 with new, much older background singers and recorded that label's first single as The Ebbtones, a name that did not exist outside the record. Vince and Freddie later joined the Flares and sang on the group's 1961 Felsted hit, "Foot Stomping-Part 1." In 1963 guitarist Buddy Harper and disk jockey Chuck Mann recorded Freddie Romain for their tiny Spindletop label. The Native Boys' "Strange Love" was a minor hit around the country after getting heavy airplay from Alan Freed on WINS in New York in the early winter of 1956, and among doo-wop fans and collectors it remains the song they're known for. But The Native Boys were a relatively polished group that made several great recordings. These days Freddie Romain lives in Suisun in Northern California and Vince Weaver lives in Inglewood.

Br. Ned Dunne
Hear my song, says long-serving Capuchin. By Mairead Sheridan. Padro Pio look-a-like, Capuchin Brother Edward Dunne, is to celebrate his Golden Jubilee this year. The Dublin-born brother who still retains his ‘capital accent’ has been in Ard Mhuire Friary Creeslough for over sixteen years. Since 1985 Brother Edward has being looking after the shop in the friary, his very own version of what he dubs ‘Dunne’s Stores better Value’. Br. Edward (71), who still goes for a swim in the sea regularly, is well- known among Creeslough people and Ards Friary visitors. He is known for his quick wit and good sense of humour and his ability to tell a good yarn. Among his many other talents is his singing ability. As he is prone to breaking into song mid-sentence, he often leaves his audience in awe of his unpredictability. Before Br. Edward joined the Order on January 26, 1952, he held all sorts of jobs. He was a van boy with Phoenix Laundry, a foot delivery boy and in his mid twenties got a promotion to work with the prestigious Gilligan’s Draper Store on Henry St. After he joined the order he proved to be a flexible recruit capable of turning his hand to anything. His first job after he was investiturised

Alice Smith Parsons Omohundro was born on September 6, 1872 in Pittsburgh. She was baptized on January 2, 1885 by Brothers Forscutt, Ells and Reese and the record shows that she was rebaptized on November 30, 1893 by Brothers Hulmes, Parrish and Criley. On March 29, 1894 she was married to Edward Elmer Omohundro at Bellevue, PA by Elder George H. Hulmes. They had eight children (Elmer, Myron, Margaret, Sidney, Herschel, Arthur, DeVere and Lawrence). Alice Parsons Omohundro died on April 15, 1949 at Altadena, California. Her husband, Edward Elmer Omohundro, died June 11, 1951. They are both buried in California. Margaret Omohundro Raisbeck wrote of her parents: "Mom and Dad liked music. She sang in the church choir. She also sang in the Christian Church choir and their director, Mr. Forney, told her he would give her voice lessons if she would sing in their choir. Later on when she came back to the RLDS Church she had to be rebaptized. Mom's sister, Emma Farley and her husband Ed would often come to our house. They would gather around the piano and sing the old songs and hymns. Their son Stanton played the piano quite well and he accompanied them. Mom also did a lot of quilting after they moved to California. She made me a beautiful quilt and it is still in good condition. She also made one for the church bazaar.

he days and the weeks passed. The time for the cotton came once again and I went to the fields to pick the cotton. I did not go to the house every day as I had. Someone else took the chamber pots outside every morning. I only saw the little girl from time to time. She would run by. Sometimes she would smile at me. If no one was looking, I smiled back. One morning I noticed that I had not seen her for many days. “Has the little girl gone away?” I asked the big brown woman from the kitchen. She always knew these things. “No, boy! She is sick! They keep her in her bed!” “Oh,” I said. “Oh.” I felt very sad for her. The big brown woman shook her head at me. I think she smiled, too, but I was not sure. I was not sure. All the day while I picked the cotton, I thought about the little girl. She must be unhappy if she is sick. She loved to run around all of the day. She loved to make noise. She loved to make trouble. I could see her running with her red scarf blowing in the breezes. I must do something to make her feel better, I thought. What could I do? What could I do?”

he days here had names. There were seven names. Seven names for the days. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Sun Day. That day had the word for the sun inside it. I liked that name the best. Sun Day. On that day, the brown and black people went to a building where we all sat on long chairs. People sang and talked. We did not go into the fields of cotton. We did not pick anything. We did not work. People took a bath in a big pot and put on different clothes that were not all sweaty. That is when we went to the building with the long chairs. A tall brown man dressed all in black stood at the front of the room. He sang. He talked. He jumped. He swayed. He danced. People called him Reverend. That was the name for the tall man People called this place church. Church was the name for this building with the long chairs called benches. We sat on the long benches and sometimes we stood up and danced and sang. I did not know what the songs meant. But in their strange words, they sounded like some of the songs of my home. And they let me dance any way I wanted. People just smiled and did not stare at me for too long. So mostly I felt safe. Reverend said many, many things He talked much about something called “heaven.” He talked much about something called “peace.” He talked much about something called “freedom.” He talked sometimes about something called “love.” I did not understand most of what he said, but he said these words over and over. Heaven. Peace. Freedom. Love.

The Prairie Choral Festival
I love choral music. If you do, too, then you owe it to yourself to take in the Prairie Choral Festival this weekend in Regina. My personal love of choral music grew out of my upbringing in the Church of Christ, which worships with a cappella congregational singing (no instruments). In church I sang all four parts as I grew up, starting out as a boy soprano and eventually metamorphosing (as boys are wont to do) into an alto, a tenor, and finally a bass/baritone, which is what I am now. My dad was a chorus conductor, and I sang in his chorus in high school, then in my university chorus, then, after moving to Regina, with the Regina Philharmonic Chorus, and finally with the University of Regina Chamber Singers. There was nothing like Juventus in Weyburn when I was a kid, but if there had been, I probably would have sung with it, too. Juventus was formed in 1994 in response to parent's desire for a quality musical experience for children aged six to 18 in a group setting. It has grown rapidly since then. In its third season, it began offering subsidies for members whose families experienced hardship in paying the annual fees and scholarship for members to attend choir camp, and in the same year established a junior choir for children aged six to 11 with limited previous musical experience. In the fall of 1998, a third choir, an intermediate choir for children aged nine to 13, was added.
