Radcl. [Radcliffe] The Radcliffe collection had formed part of the Radcliffe Library, the contents of which were moved to a new library in the University Museum in 1861. The Radcliffe Trustees in 1893 presented to the Bodleian such of their non-scientific books as it did not already possess. The collection comprises 780 v, being non-scientific works of 16 th th cent, and including books on architecture, classics, history, literature and theology. He had been a considerable benefactor during his lifetime: some hundreds of books in the shelfmark Jur. and elsewhere were given by him from 1730 on. A series of almanacs in 175 v, ranging in date from 1607-1747, were sent to the library in 1752-55, and are shelfmarked Rawlinson Almanacs: other almanacs have been added to the collection. He bequeathed to the University his large collection of 5,205 mss, among which are bound much printed material, largely contemporary printed sheets, including ballad sheets and book prospectuses; and all such printed books as were on vellum or silk or contained any manuscript note. c1,800 v in quarto and smaller sizes are shelfmarked Rawlinson. Martin, Benjamin Biographia Philosophica Being an Account of the Lives, Writings, and Inventions of the Most Eminent Philosophers and Mathematicians . Distributed for the Thoemmes Press. 1764 Edition. 567 p. 5-3/8 x 8-1/2 2002 Cloth CUSA $140.00tx 1-85506-973-3 Spring 2002 Benjamin Martin (1704-82) came from a family of Surrey farmers and seems to have received little in the way of formal education. However, he taught himself mathematics and astronomy, and in time became an accomplished inventor and maker of scientific instruments. He was also a keen disciple of Newtonon whose physics he gave public lecturesas well as a considerable philosopher of language. Martin published many books on these various subjects, but his chief ambition as a writer was nothing less than to provide a synopsis of all scientific and philosophical knowledge in a grand fourteen-volume series. Martin only ever completed five of these projected booktwo on philology, two on mathematics, and the Biographia Philosophica This rare little encyclopaedia contains entries detailing the lives and works of 157 people, from Thales and Euclid in antiquity to Sir Isaac Newton and Dr Nicholas Saunderson in Martin's own century. Typically, an entry will begin with biographical information and then move on to a critical assessment of its subject's work, 'digested according to the Order of Time in which they lived'. Sometimes, a bibliography is given in conclusion. As was usual in his era, Martin construed the term 'philosophy' broadly enough to include the sciences as well as abstract thought.

The Superiority of the King James Bible Translators
by Dr. D.A. Waite
We would like to thank Dr. D.A. Waite and The Bible For Today for giving us permission to reproduce the following information here. The following was taken from "Defending The King James Bible" (pp.71-80) by Dr. Waite. Please do not reproduce this elsewhere without first obtaining permission from The Bible For Today Two Superior King James New Testament Translators The Activities of Henry Savile. Sir Henry Savile was in Company Four, the Oxford group. That group had the task of translating six books: the Gospels, Acts, and Revelation. Here is some of the background of Henry Savile:
a. First , he became, very early, famous for his Greek and mathematical learning.
b. Second , he became tutor in Greek and Mathematics to Queen Elizabeth.
c. Third , he translated the histories of Cornelius Tacitus and published the same with notes. Tacitus was a Latin historian, and Savile translated his work into English. The translators of these new versions, I'm sure, wouldn't be able to translate anything this complicated in Latin. In our country, Latin used to be required in the lower grades. In many schools it was a requirement for graduation from High School. Years ago that was the case; but now, in some schools, you don't have to take any foreign language at all. Some require you to take onemaybe French, German or Spanish. I took a year of Latin in college, but didn't have to take it in High School. I took Spanish there, and French in college. Of course I studied Hebrew and Greek in Seminary.

Longley Old Hall Easter Open Days Visiting The Hall today ... Table of dates A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE HALL Longley Old Hall is a timber framed Grade II* listed manor house. It was owned by the Ramsden family, the Lords of the Manors of Almondbury and Huddersfield, from about 1540 until 1976. The original owners of the Hall were the Wood family (also recorded as de la Wode, del Wood and Woodd) who are first recorded as living in Longley in 1338, although mention of a family of the same name goes back to the 1290s. Tax returns of 1379 and 1524 show the Woods' as the richest family in Almondbury. In the early 16th Century the Wood family was connected by marriage to the Beaumonts of Whitley. John Wood disinherited his son at the beginning of the Reformation and was left with three eligible daughters. Elizabeth married Thomas Kay of Newsome; Cecily married Thomas Savile of Eckesley (Exley), and Jennet married John Savile of New Hall, Elland. By these marriages the Woods established connections with the major land owners in the region. At the same time the Ramsdens’ of Crawstone Hall, Greetland, had started to show similar ambitions. Elizabeth, daughter of Robert Ramsden, married Henry Savile of Bradley Hall, Greetland and had three sons. Sir John was Baron of the Exchequer in 1598. Sir Henry was tutor to Queen Elizabeth, Provost of Eton College, and Warden of Merton College, Oxford where he was responsible for building the Fellows' Quad and inspiring work at the Bodleian Library. He was knighted by James I for his work in producing the Authorised version of the Bible and the Book of Common Prayer. The third son, Thomas was a Proctor of Oxford University in 1592.
