The Funniest `Schrodinger's Cat'
Todd E Van Hoosear ( vanhoose@lalaland.cl.msu.edu Tue, 17 Jan 1995 00:42:40 -0500 (EST) Susan, etc... Hi! Schrodinger's Cat is a quantum mechanics thingie that "proves" that something (or someone) can be alive and dead at the same time. (*I* could prove that just by pointing around at the people I work with!) Cecil Adams, who does a column called The Straight Dope (which has been collected into a few books) not only answered a reader who asked about Schrodinger's Cat, but managed to do it in an incredibly funny rhyme... so here it is. Hope you enjoy. Jane Forwarded message- Newsgroups: alt.fan.cecil-adams Subject: Cecil does Quantum Mechanics Date: Fri, 4 Mar 1994 01:49:48 GMT Reader Query: Cecil, you're my final hope Of finding out the true Straight Dope For I have been reading of Schrodinger's cat But none of my cats are at all like that. This unusual animal (so it is said) Is simultaneously live and dead! What I don't understand is just why he Can't be one or the other, unquestionably. My future now hangs in between eigenstates. In one I'm enlightened, the other I ain't. If you understand, Cecil, then show me the way And rescue my psyche from quantum decay. But if this queer thing has perplexed even you, Then I will and won't see you in Schrodinger's zoo. - Randy F., Chicago

  • ISBN: 0486661016 Reader Reviews 8 of 9 people found the following review helpful: An excellent guide in statistical thermodynamics, July 7, 2000 Reviewer: Boer Attila Laszlo from Brasov, Romania This book is an excellent guide in statistical thermodynamics. It's started with the theoretical justification of phenomenological thermodynamics and its system of concepts. In principle the methods of statistical mechanics are applicable to non-equilibrium states as well as to equilibrium properties. The author (Nobel prize,1933) treats only the theory of equilibrium properties for which the destination "Statistical Thermodynamics" has been adopted. As a consequence of the structure of phenomenological thermodynamic, statistical thermodynamics developed in this book separates into two principal parts: the derivation of thermodynamic principles and the calculation of thermodynamic functions for concrete systems. This text seems especially good for teaching basic thermodynamics and statistical mechanics. I recommend this book especially for students, because it's highest quality is the clarity of the exposed physical ideas.

    Erwin Schrodinger
From Nobel Lectures , Physics 1922-1941. (In corso di traduzione in italiano)
    The Nobel Prize in Physics
Erwin Schrödinger was born on August 12, 1887, in Vienna, the only child of Rudolf Schrödinger, who was married to a daughter of Alexander Bauer, his Professor of Chemistry at the Technical College of Vienna. Erwin's father came from a Bavarian family which generations before had settled in Vienna. He was a highly gifted man with a broad education. After having finished his chemistry studies, he devoted himself for years to Italian painting. After this he took up botany, which resulted in a series of papers on plant phylogeny.
Schrödinger's wide interests dated from his school years at the Gymnasium, where he not only had a liking for the scientific disciplines, but also appreciated the severe logic of ancient grammar and the beauty of German poetry. (What he abhorred was memorizing of data and learning from books.)
From 1906 to 1910 he was a student at the University of Vienna, during which time he came under the strong influence of Fritz Hasenöhrl, who was Boltzmann's successor. It was in these years that Schrödinger acquired a mastery of eigenvalue problems in the physics of continuous media, thus laying the foundation for his future great work. Hereafter, as assistant to Franz Exner, he, together with his friend K. W. F. Kohlrausch, conducted practical work for students (without himself, as he said, learning what experimenting was). During the First World War he served as an artillery officer.

    Erwin Rudolf Josef Alexander Schrödinger
Born: 12 Aug 1887 in Erdberg, Vienna, Austria
Died: 4 Jan 1961 in Vienna, Austria
Erwin Schrödinger 's father Rudolf Schrödinger ran a small linoleum factory which he had inherited from his own father. Erwin's mother, Emily Bauer, was half English, this side of the family coning from Leamington Spa, and half Austrian with her father coming from Vienna. Schrödinger learnt English and German almost at the same time due to the fact that both were spoken in the household. He was not sent to elementary school, but received lessons at home from a private tutor up to the age of ten. He entered the Akademisches Gymnasium in the autumn of 1898, rather later than was usual since he spent a long holiday in England around the time he might have entered the school. He wrote later about his time at the Gymnasium:- I was a good student in all subjects, loved mathematics and physics, but also the strict logic of the ancient grammars, hated only memorising incidental dates and facts. Of the German poets, I loved especially the dramatists, but hated the pedantic dissection of this works. In [15] there is the following quotation from a student in Schrödinger's class at school:- Especially in physics and mathematics, Schrödinger had a gift for understanding that allowed him, without any homework, immediately and directly to comprehend all the material during the class hours and to apply it. After the lecture ... it was possible for [our professor] to call Schrödinger immediately to the blackboard and to set him problems, which he solved with playful facility.

Czym jest ¿ycie? to klasyczny, licz±cy ju¿ ponad pó³ wieku, esej wielkiego fizyka Erwina Schrödingera. Znakomity uczony odpowiadaj±c na tytu³owe, fundamentalne pytanie, podejmuje próbê zjednoczenia ówczesnej wiedzy z ró¿nych dziedzin nauki. Imponuj±ca rozmachem i dyscyplin± rozumowania pozycja, na której wychowa³y siê pokolenia wspó³czesnych naukowców.
Esejowi towarzyszy rozprawa Umys³ i materia po¶wiêcona miejscu ¶wiadomo¶ci w ¶wiecie fizycznym i biologicznym uwarunkowaniom dzia³ania umys³u.
