Analisi combinatoria, teoria della rappresentazione, teoria degli invarianti: un "ménage à trois"
Ottavio Mario D'Antona , Gian Carlo Rota This paper is a learned and pleasant conversation on the state of researeh in these three branches of mathematics. The authors talk about amusing anecdotes of Cambridge in the 1950's before turning to the character Alfred Young. Then there is a disquisition on the two types of exinsting mathematicians: the problem solvers and the theoricians. The former only find interest in the resolution of a problem, while the latter generate a theory which ends by making the original problem trivial. Hermann Grassmann and the external algebra are then mentioned. The article finishes with an interesting consideration on the fundamental question: when two mathematicians meet and check their reciprocal mathematical knowledge, what really matters to them is the understanding of the basic problem of the other. 1.1 Introduzione

Stanford Report, February 13, 2002 Memorial Resolution: Menahem Max Schiffer
Menahem Max Schiffer, Professor Emeritus of Mathematics, died on November 11, 1997 at the age of 86. He became a Professor of Mathematics on September 1, 1952 after first visiting the department, joining Stanford's Applied Mathematics and Statistics Lab, and having held earlier positions at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Harvard, and Princeton. He served as the Executive Head of the Mathematics Department from 1954 1959. In 1967 he was appointed to the Robert Grimmett Professorship of Mathematics, becoming the first member of the department to be awarded an endowed chair; he held that position until his retirement in 1977. In 1968 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 1970 to the National Academy of Sciences. Schiffer married Fanya Rabinivics in 1937 in Jerusalem. She died in 1998. They are survived by their daughter Dinah Singer, Chief of the Molecular Regulation Section of the Experimental Immunology Branch at the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health.

Patent Issues with GSM 06.10
Philips is claiming intellectual property on GSM 06.10. They haven't contacted the authors of this library, but at least two large companies that wanted to integrate GSM 06.10 codecs into their products have been approached; one decided to pull their codec, another to pull just the encoder and leave the decoder. (So, apparently, at least some lawyers think the intellectual property applies only to one half of the process.) I don't know which parts of the patent are new, or whether it would hold up in court, but of course nobody wants to go to court over an issue as small as this.

The picture for this article was taken in 1938 in Zagreb (Yugoslavia), his first place of refuge. In 1939 he emigrated to the United States and turned to applied mathematics. He was one of the first to apply normed spaces in numerical analysis. Exhibition Announcement* Terror and Exile: Berlin mathematicians under the Nazi regime 1933-1945 In 1998 the ICM returns to Germany after an intermission of 94 years. This long interval covers the darkest period in German history. Therefore the German Mathematical Society (DMV) wants to honor the memory of all those who suffered under the Nazi terror. The DMV does this in the form of an exhibition presenting the biographies of 53 mathematicians from Berlin who were victims of the Nazi regime between 1933 and 1945. The fate of this small group illustrates painfully well the personal sufferings and the destruction of scientific and cultural life; it also sheds light on the instruments of suppression and collaboration.
