Challenging an era where women struggled to obtain a foot hold in the elite and educated coterie, Charlotte Angas Scott overcame society's disapproval by emerging as one of England's first women to obtain a doctorate in mathematics. The late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries encompassed an era in which society viewed the woman's place to be in the home. However, Charlotte Scott felt the importance of seeking equality for women, and she was able to accomplish her endeavor faced with a lifetime of challenge. Successful in her aspirations, she is considered to be a pioneer for advancement of women's role in the field of mathematics. Charlotte remained at Girton College where she taught for four years. At the end of her fourth year, Charlotte was presented with the opportunity to teach at Bryn Mawr College in the United States. She had received very high recommendations and was one of the first to be offered a position. Charlotte eagerly decided to leave England and accept the teaching position. She saw a land filled with opportunity awaiting her. It was only a matter of time before Charlotte set many mathematical precedents at the college. Her list of accomplishments include setting the admission requirements in 1885 for Bryn Mawr College in arithmetic, algebra, and plane geometry (Kenschaft, 104). She urged the college to administer an entrance examination which was finally instituted in 1901. She established policies as Chief Examiner in 1902 and 1903 that are still in effect. Charlotte wrote a book entitled

Charlotte Angas Scott 's father was a Congregational Church minister and provided tutors for her from the age of seven. From these tutors Charlotte Scott was first introduced to mathematics. She won a scholarship in 1876 to Hitchin College, soon to be renamed Girton College, of the University of Cambridge. Four years later she was placed eighth Wrangler but, as a woman, she was not allowed to graduate. Kenschaft, writing in [2], quotes a report of the graduation ceremony:- The man read out the names and when he came to 'eighth', before he could say the name, all the undergraduates called out 'Scott of Girton', and cheered tremendously, shouting her name over and over again with tremendous cheers and raising of hats. Scott continued research at Girton on algebraic geometry under Cayley 's supervision receiving her doctorate in 1885. In this year Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania, United States opened. On

Daily Record Business Writer When Charlotte Scott retired in 1998 after 28 years of working for the Somerset County Board of Education, she knew she wanted do something with her time. For four months, the former English teacher and grant writer searched for a way to fill her days and give back to the community that she had lived in since she was 21. She never even imagined what would come next.Charlotte Scott, owner, secretary and treasurer of East Coast Operations, started up a consulting firm after she retired from the county board of education. Her oldest son, Greg Cain, had been selling Maryland blue crabs and other seafood online for the previous three years. The business, begun out of the backyard of his home in the Eastern Shore town of Crisfield, had started as part-hobby and part-experiment and had begun to see its sales snowball. "I started in the backyard actually to see if it would fly," said Cain, 31. "There was a point when we said, ‘We need to be serious about this.’"

Charlotte Angas Scott Charlotte A. Scott was a determined women who was not going to let societal rules stop her from accomplishing her journey through the mathematical world. Charlotter A. Scott was born June 8, 1858. She was the second oldest of seven children. Her family was Nonconformist Christians who were for reformationas well as education of women. Scott's father provided her with math tutors at the tender age of seven. With her family support she won a scholarship in 1876. Scott was only eighteen years old when she received this award to Hitchlin College. This unbelievable accomplishment gave Scott the courage to compete in the Tripos Exams that were offered at Cambridge University, four years later. Scott ranked eighth amongst all the men but was prohibited to attend the awards ceremony because she was a women. Scott did not let that stop her, in fact it pushed her to work even harder. This determination resulted in a Bachelor of Science degree in 1882 and a doctorates in 1885. Not only did she receive them with excellent scholastic acheivement, she graduated both times "first class." Scott continued to be active in the mathematical world. She helped develop New York Mathematical Society which later became the American Mathematics Society. In this program Scott was the only woman on its first board.

Charlotte Hawkins Brown and Clarissa M. Scott Delany
Week of April 2, 2001 During the decade of the 1920's there was unprecedented cultural, intellectual, political and social activity in the nation's African-American community. This movement, known at the time as the "New Negro Movement" and later as the "Harlem Renaissance" was, as the name implies, centered in the Harlem region of New York City, but extended throughout the population centers of the East Coast, including Washington, D.C. and Boston. This week we celebrate Wellesley alumnae of this period. Charlotte Hawkins Brown
In 1901 Charlotte Hawkins left the normal school early and began teaching in a missionary school, the Bethany Institute, in her home state of North Carolina. As was the fate of many missionary schools, the Bethany Institute was forced to close the following year due to financial problems. In that same year, with assistance from Alice Freeman Palmer, Charlotte Hawkins established the Alice Freeman Palmer Institute, located in Sedalia North Carolina. She led the school, which included instruction from elementary through junior college levels, until the mid-1950's. Charlotte Hawkins Brown pursued own her higher education at a number of institutions including Simmons College and Temple University. During the 1927-28 academic year she was a "special student" at Wellesley. This status meant that she was free to choose any courses she wished, unconstrained by degreee requirements. In 1944 she was elected as an honorary member of the Wellesley College Alumnae Association.
