[Page 241 continued from previous section] Further, it appeareth not by any story of credit that true and sincere preaching hath endured in any one place above one hundred years; but it is evident that images, superstition, and worshipping of images and idolatry have continued many hundred years. For all writings and experience do testify, that good things do by little and little ever decay, until they be clean banished, m and contrariwise evil things do more and more encrease, till they come to be a full perfection of wickedness. n Neither need we to seek examples far off for a proof hereof: our present matter is an example. For preaching of God’s word, most sincere in the beginning, by process of time waxed less and less pure, and after corrupt, and last of all altogether laid o down and left off, and other inventions of men crept in place p of it. And, on the other part, images among Christian men were first painted, and that in whole stories together, which had some signification in them; afterwards they were embossed, and made of timber, stone, plaster, and metal. And first they were only kept privately in private men’s houses; and then after they crept into churches and temples but first by painting, and after by embossing; and yet were they nowhere at the first worshipped. But shortly after they began q to be worshipped of the ignorant sort of men, as appeareth by the Epistle that Gregory, the first of that name Bishop of Rome, did write to Serenus, Bishop of Marcelles.

Book 6
Chapter XXXIII.
In these days then, when the patriarch Peter was dead, Serenus undertook the government of the church of Aquileia. [1] He was a man endowed with a simple character and devoted to the service of Christ.
[1] It was afterwards, at the request of king Liutprand, that pope Gregory II sent the pallium of a metropolitan to Serenus, bishop of Aquileia Pandolo, VII, 2, 13, see Muratori Rer. Ital. Script. XII, 131 ; Chronicle of John the Deacon, p. 96, Monticolo). Dissensions arose between the patriarchs of Aquileia and Grado, and Gregory wrote to Serenus warning him not to pass beyond the bounds of the Langobard nation and trespass upon Grado (Hodgkin, 466-467). The scat of the patriarch was subsequently removed, first to Cormons, and after Serenus had died and Calixtus had succeeded him (see Ch. 51, infra), to Cividale.
Chapter XXXIV.
[1] The authorities disagree and the passage is not clear. Perhaps a partial council, summoned by the Pope, is meant. Filippicus declared in favor of the Monotheletes, who had been condemned by the Sixth (Ecumenical Council at Constantinople (Giansevero).
[2] A.D. 713 (Hodgkin, VI, 386).

Probably in Crawford County, Kansas. His father was John William Amend born July 1, 1846 in Wood County, Virginia and married Catherine Hurst in Labetta County, Kansas in 1868. Catherine passed away in about 1872. Later on Anthony Amend (his grandfather) was made his legal guardian.
I believe Serenus married a Nettie Bell Street and had a son and a daughter.
Serenus had a younger brother named Charles Ellsworth Amend who is my grandfather. After his marriage he settled in Sterling, Kansas. At time of Charles death it listed Serenus as living in Libby, Montana
Would like to hear from his family as I an now working on the Amend family tree.

    THE TRALLEIS ARCHAEOLOGICAL PROJECT
Tralleis, an ancient Carian city located on the Meander River in western Anatolia, was one of the most prosperous cities of classical Anatolia. The importance of this city was primarily due to its school of sculpture and its textile and pottery industries. It was Osman Hamdi Bey, from the Imperial Museum in Ýstanbul who first carried out archaeological excavations in Tralleis around 1900. After almost a century, excavations resumed in 1996, when a Turkish team headed by Rafet Dinç of Adnan Menderes University conceived an archaeological project in cooperation with Aydýn Museum. This project aims to systematically recover as much information as possible about the cultural history of this ancient city. The excavations have provided ample evidence that Tralleis should be classified among the most important cities of classical Anatolia. The project is primarily sponsored by the Aydýn Municipality. The close cooperation between the local government and the archaeological team is a rare example which holds great promise for the future of Turkish archaeology.
The Tralleis excavations project originally started with the surveying of the city and its surrounding territory, which resulted in the creation of a database using Geographical Information Systems. The excavations have focused on two major areas: the gymnasium-bath complex (locally known as Üçgözler) and the so-called arsenal area. The preliminary results of the archaeological studies indicate that processes such as erosion and colluvial movements played a major role in the burial of numerous architectural remains which reflect the magnificence of the city's past. This is particularly evident in the thick accumulation of soil in the arsenal area. The so-called arsenal area is composed of a series of interconnected underground galleries and related defense structures such as façades and city-gates.

SERENADE
See ISIS; A. Bouché-Leclercq, Histoire des Lagides, i. (1903), ch. iv.; J. G. Mjlne, History of Egypi under Roman Rule (1898), p. 140; G. Lafaye, Histoire du culte des divinités d’Alexandrie hors de l’Egypte (Paris, 1884). (F. LL. G.) Serena was founded by Juan Bohon in 1544, on the opposite side of the river, and was named after Pedro Valdivia’s birthplace in Estremadura, Spain. It was destroyed by the Indians soon after, and was rebuilt on its present site in 1549 by Francisco de Aguirre. The typical scheme of a large serenade or divertitnento differs from that of a symphony only in having six movements instead of four, the additions being another slow movement and minuet or scherzo. Beethoven’s septet and Schubert’s octet are on this plan, and are just as much serenades as Mozart’s Haffner” serenade, which is (not counting introductions) in eight movements with a kind of violin concerto in the middle. The six-movement scheme (though without the serenade style) was adopted by Beethoven in one of the profoundest and most serious works in all music, the string quartet in B flat, Op. 130. Brahms’s first essays in symphonic form took the shape of two orchestral serenades, of which the first was originally sketched for a large -group of solo instruments. If it had finally taken that form Brahms would have called it a divertirnento.

Roman. Fischer 672 Seiten ISBN: DM 19,- (gebundene Sonderausgabe!) Ersch.
