    http://talesofold.net/family/danielshanks.htm
    SOMETHING OLD
    THE DANIEL/SHANKS FAMILY
Th is is the story of two families that became one.
Both families came to this country many years ago.
They both saw the birth of a nation.
Matthew Shanks and his son James
arrived in Charles Town, South Carolina in 1767.
They had set sail on "Earl of Hillsborough" early in January of 1767.
Originally the family was from Scotland, then Ireland.
They were members of a group of people known as Scotch-Irish.
Matthew and his young son James made their home
in the old 96th District of South Carolina.
In South Carolina Matthew obtained a new wife, family, and home.
When his new country went to war, he served in the militia.
William Daniel and his wife Elizabeth also saw the birth of a new country. We know nothing of his origins. He may have also fought in the Revolutionary War, but we are not certain of where he served or what he did. He is our "Elusive William Daniel."
Matthew Shanks had a great-grandson named William G. Shanks. William Daniel had a great-granddaughter named Diademia Daniel. Through these young people the families were united.

    POLITICS CARRIED TO GRAVE
The Kansas City Times , Monday September 30, 1985
    By James J. Fisher
KCT Editors Note - James J. Fisher is a columnist for the Kansas City Times and the following appeared in his column a couple of weeks ago. Following publication of the column, Robert Shanks brought some information he called "the rest of the story", and asked that we publish it along with the column.) Browning, Mo.
    - "What´s this?" Isabelle Gooch demanded. Mrs. Gooch, 84, had a sharp edge in her voice. She was standing in the Gooch family cemetery south of here glaring at a weathered tombstone. "That´s not the letter ´S´, is it?" she asked. It wasn´t. Thank heaven. Just the wind and rain and snow over these years that had worn a small indentation in front of the name "Hanks." "Well, that´s fine," Mrs. Gooch said, seemingly relieved that nobody had made a mistake. The Hankses are buried on the west side of the Gooch cemetery. Across the way, on the east and separated by a clearly marked 35 feet, are the Shankses. On each side, of course, are the markers of the Gooches. Thomas S. Gooch and kin are buried on the east. William G. Gooch and kin on the west. Which isn´t all that suprising. Families are usually clustered in cemeteries. But here, three miles south of Browning, which straddles the Sullivan-Linn county line, is something else.

SHANKS This is a work in progress. It is a North American, west coast branch of the SHANKS family, originating in Ireland/Scotland, compiled by the first name on the list below, Roland Neville Shanks (roland@zeballos.com It's meant mainly for family, so if you happen to run into this page, you must be looking for Shanks information. I'd be pleased to share with you. Last year, 2000, after putting all this genealogy information on the page, I thought it would be great to host a family Open House here in Zeballos, B.C. and I invited the immediate family. We had 20 people make the trek to this small west coast village and we had a great time. So much so that my wife, Joan and I decided to make it an annual affair. As long as circumstances permit, we'll be At Home to the Shanks', immediate and extended families included, on the long weekend of August every year. Check in to this page for a link to information about this year's Gathering. Shanks in Zeballos - 2001 Shanks in Zeballos - 2002 Genealogy What follows is a list of information and cross-links compiled by my sister, Anne Bottiglieri and myself. I hope it helps others in the family who are gathering information about their ancestors. I have capitalized the name by which people are called, where known.

Introduction The Weddell Family Papers consist of a series of Civil War era letters, written by a variety of people, to William Weddell of Scotch Ridge, Webster Township, Wood County, Ohio. The collection was loaned to the Center for Archival Collections for microfilming in February 1987, with the cooperation of Richard Sheets of Pemberville, Ohio. No restrictions exist on the use of this collection. Duplication is permitted for the purposes of preservation and research. The collection was processed and register prepared by Marilyn Levinson in March-April, 1987.
Biographical Sketch William Weddell (1839-1895) is the central figure in this collection of correspondence. His father, also named William, was an early settler of Webster Township, Wood County, Ohio. William, Jr. joined Company K, 21st Ohio Volunteer Infantry in 1861, but was discharged on Jan. 8, 1862 on surgeon's certificate. The authors of the letters to William were either comrades from Company K, or relatives:

without the express permission of the author/submitter. Simmons Cemetery submitted by Shelli Steedman Directions: From Interstate 5, take the Mt. Angel exit. Go east on Highway 214 also known as Newberg Highway. When the road branches, continue S/SW on Highway 214. At the intersection where Highway 214 branches into 99e, turn SE onto Highway 214. There is also a Mt. Angel sign. The cemetery is located on a hillside off an unmarked road just before Domonic Road on the east side of the road T5S R1W S34. I walked the cemetery January 2003. Due to the poor condition of the headstones and dark conditions, it was difficult to differentiate some numbers like 0,3,8. I hope to return in the summer and scrub the stones that are difficult to read and make any necessary changes.
