John Burnham and Reed Baer and their Newport based team on "Grace" completed the 6 race (1 throwout) event with finishes of 1,2,(11),2,2,2 to beat Bill Berry and the team on "Syrinx" from Buzzards Bay by 7 points. Reg Willcocks and his team, sailing "Whistler", was the top local boat finishing fourth. These teams used all North Sails One Design Shields sails. The series featured all types of conditions as a wind storm blew through on Wednesday, measurement day, with gusts up to 60 mph! The next three race days saw the winds continue to diminish from 20-25 on Thursday down to around 10 on Saturday. The changing conditions put a premium on boatspeed and gear changing. As this years champion told us after the event: " Your tuning guide was key to our success. It has given us confidence to know that we are in the right ball park over the last two seasons that we have raced the Shields, so we can concentrate on sailing fast and tactics."

He actually was hurt by Leon Panetta, his management and budget director, who this week spread the ugly truth and basically confirmed what most of the analyses were. And only in Washington after somebody spoke the truth would the question be: why did he speak the truth, rather than what did he say. Did he have a plan? Was this a billiard shot or something? But that really hurt. I mean, there's no doubt about it. ... It hurt because Leon Panetta has a reputation for candor. It hurt because he is the management and budget director, and it hurt because he said it. And it did confirm independently what had been written in most of the assessments that this was an administration that was trying to do too much. It was a pretty pessimistic assessment.

August 5, 1979 In October, 1977, while visiting a friend in Saint George, Utah I noticed a book on his coffee table with a curious title. The title was I was only able to read small portions of the book before my friend came home from a meeting. When he returned home I asked him why he had an anti-Mormon book in his home (incidentally, this was the very first piece of anti-Mormon literature I had ever seen). He stated that a friend of his had sent the book to him for his comments on the accuracy of the material regarding Howard Hughes, and indicated that most of the material was accurate. Following my visit with my friend (who I will leave nameless to prevent any embarrassment to him), I felt compelled to obtain a copy of the book to finish reading it. In June of 1978, without thinking of what I was doing, I went into the Berean Book Store (a Christian Bible book store) in Bakersfield, California to see if they might have a copy of the book or if they might know how to get a copy. Much to my surprise, I found that Jerald and Sandra Tanner are very prolific writers of books regarding the authenticity of the Mormon Church. The store did not have a copy of
