AN INTRODUCTION TO THE FORT ALLEN ANTIQUE FARM EQUIPMENT ASSOCIATION, INC. The Fort Allen Antique Farm Association, Inc. came into being as a result of the dedication of a few men to the restoration and preservation of antique farm equipment. Their aim was to educate current and future generations about the tools and methods their fathers and forefathers employed as they raised, clothed, nourished and educated their families. That aim remains primary for the Association today. Incorporated in 1966, the Association now boasts more than 400 members. The Association members meet on the first Tuesday of each month at 8:00 P.M. Meetings are held at the Alwine Civic Center in the cold months and at the Club's Show Grounds during the warmer months. Call (724) 527-4050 for directions. The Association features a "work day" every Wednesday at the Shields Farm, located in Delmont. Members are encouraged to participate in the various Association projects not only to help carry out the necessary work of the Association but also to more fully benefit from membership. (Lots of weighty problems are solved while members sit on milk crates and sip coffee!) Jobs are not assigned, but rather are chosen by each member according to special skills and interests of the participant. We are very proud that the Association has purchased fifty acres of prime farm land at West Overton, (between Mount Pleasant and Scottdate on Route 819) adjacent to the highly acclaimed West Overton Museums. Construction of buildings, sheds and other necessary facilities is ongoing. While we retain our autonomy, our good friends at the West Overton Museums have been most generous in giving us their full support and cooperation, and we look forward to working in close association with the Museums on joint projects. "Work day" at West Overton begins at 6:00 P.M. on Thursdays.

Game summary By Nancy Marrapese-Burrell, Globe Staff, 12/13/2002 lame the schedule that had the Bruins playing their eighth game in 14 days. Blame the Bruins, who were not nearly as sharp as they've been on many other nights this year. Blame the Ottawa Senators, who were still ticked off at being embarrassed when they were beaten by a six-goal margin here Nov. 9. The bottom line is Boston is in its first official slump of the 2002-03 season as a result of a 5-2 loss last night to the Senators at the FleetCenter. Last night's defeat, coupled with Tuesday's drubbing by the Montreal Canadiens, marked the first time the Bruins have lost back-to-back contests this season. After an outstanding October and November, this month has brought the Bruins to earth. It started with a dreadful performance against the St. Louis Blues Dec. 3 (a 4-0 loss) and was followed by two Houdini-style escapes against Atlanta and Tampa Bay that turned into overtime wins. A decisive victory over the Rangers in New York last Sunday masked what had been evident for several games - that the Bruins were not playing the same way they had in earning so much success earlier, and it was alarmingly true last night.

The Unabomber and me: no parallelograms here
By Peter Rosenthal If f is a continuous function defined on the open unit disk in the complex plane, then a boundary function for f is a function on the unit circle that is obtained by taking limits of f along arcs. One of the first theorems of Ted Kaczynski states that a boundary function of a homeomorphism is continuous on the complement of a countable set. We've been bombarded lately with stories about Ted Kaczynski, the loner mathematician who is better known as the Unabomber suspect. I had my own brush with the story of the man in the orange prison garb. It all started April 3. A caller said he was a reporter from the New York Times and asked whether I was the Peter Rosenthal who had received a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Michigan in 1967. I said I was, and the reporter asked whether I remembered a Theodore Kaczynski. This Kaczynski fellow, too, had received a Ph.D. in math at the same university in the same year. And he had just been arrested in the Unabomber case. I thought hard for a moment; the name wasn't familiar.

Daigon turned from his station, "It could be a lure. We don't know how advanced they are. Chlik may purposely be disguising their technology and strength."
"They may be able to strike us," Allen said. "Our shields are down to transport water. They might have ships hidden in the moons to attack us after we are disabled."
"But why," Ibaren studied the dark orange planet on the screen. "What information do you have on the Chirra, Mr. Prado? Are there factions? Is it possible 1 would use the water source to force a situation?"
"What information we have on file does not conflict with what Chlik said, captain. Goban 5 is a desert planet composed of rock and rock dust. The water source allows for 3 settlements. They maintain marginal farms and hunt wild birds and small rodents with slings. They are no longer warlike. They do not seek off-world contacts. They do not fear contact and are recorded as being courteous to visitors. The Chirra are not interested in buying or trading."
"Commander," Ibaren said, "we will be cautious. There must be an off-world agent involved capable of moving that rock. Lt. Allen, scan the surface for the original location of the obstruction."

Testimony Before the Subcommittee on Space and Aeronautics, Committee on Science, House of Representatives SPACE STATION Russian Compliance With Safety Requirements Statement of Allen Li, Associate Director, National Security and International Affairs Division March 16, 2000 Mr. Chairman and Members of the Subcommittee: We are pleased to be here today to discuss our ongoing work on the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) International Space Station. We are currently responding to a request from the Committee Chairman to review Russian compliance with space station safety requirements. We plan to finalize our work and report on this issue next month. Today, we will address (1) significant areas where the Russian-built Zarya and Service Module do not comply with safety requirements, (2) NASA’s review and approval of noncompliances, and (3) whether NASA was due any compensation from the Zarya contractor for noncompliance or performance problems. Working with the Russian space agency and other international partners, NASA is responsible for establishing overall space station safety requirements. NASA is also responsible for certifying that all elements and payloads, and the space station as a whole, are safe. Russia agreed that its elements would meet or exceed the overall safety requirements established by NASA. Russia also agreed to provide NASA with data to support safety reviews and certifications. NASA must approve any noncompliance with safety requirements before it can approve launches of U.S. and partner elements.
