Thomas Simpson is best remembered for his work on interpolation and numerical methods of integration. His first job was as a weaver. At this time he taught mathematics privately and from 1737 he began to write texts on mathematics. He also worked on probability theory and in 1740 published The Nature and Laws of Chance. Much of Simpson's work in this area was based on earlier work of De Moivre Simpson was the most distinguished of a group of itinerant lecturers who taught in the London coffee-houses. He worked on the Theory of Errors and aimed to prove that the arithmetic mean was better than a single observation. Simpson published the two volume work The Doctrine and Application of Fluxions in 1750. It contains work of Cotes . In 1754 he became editor of the Ladies Diary The following description of Simpson by Charles Hutton (made 35 years after Simpson's death) is interesting It has been said that Mr Simpson frequented low company, with whom he used to guzzle porter and gin: but it must be observed that the misconduct of his family put it out of his power to keep the company of gentlemen, as well as to procure better liquor.

This article is not about what I feel about O.J. Simpson, but rather what I am feeling about Marguerite Whitley Simpson Thomas. Through all the media mania about the O.J. Simpson tragedy, the thought of the first Mrs. Simpson kept coming back to me. Actually, it was upper-most in my mind. First let me say, this article (like the others in Meanderings) is not intended to negate the tragedy of the death of Nicole Brown Simpson or Ronald Goldman. It is my feeling about the impact of the tragedy on a woman that is still living, the first Mrs. Simpson. When I first started thinking about Marguerite Simpson, like most things I feel, music popped up in my mind to provide some context to my feelings. The more I think about her, the more I'm reminded of the warnings of the women poets. I heard Aretha sing, "if you want a do right woman, you gotta be a do right man." Then Nancy Wilson piped in, "guess who I saw today my love," and Aretha came back at me, "I don't want nobody, always sittin around with me and my man..." In June of 1967, Marguerite Whitley married Orenthal James Simpson. An "around the way girl" and a "home boy." Different generation, same feeling. Coulda been

Thomas SIMPSON Thomas SIMPSON was one of the first people to establish a business at the site of Hay in the western Riverina of New South Wales. He was an energetic entrepreneur and prominent citizen of Hay whose influence profoundly shaped the business and social-life of the developing township and district. Thomas SIMPSON was born in about 1835 in Yorkshire, England, probably in the village of Kildwick (between Skipton and Keighley), the son of John SIMPSON and Elizabeth ( née WHITAKER). Thomas' father was a blacksmith. John and Elizabeth SIMPSON had a large family of at least 13 children, born between 1817 and 1841. On 28 June 1837 Thomas’ parents had each of their six youngest children, including Thomas, baptised into the Wesleyan Methodist Church at Ickornshaw, in the parish of Kildwick.
    Thomas SIMPSON
( photographed in 1869 ) Thomas SIMPSON, aged 19 years, emigrated to Australia in company with his elder brothers, William and Joseph, aboard the Red Jacket . They arrived at Melbourne in March 1855. The three brothers were blacksmiths by trade. By 1857 they had made their way to Deniliquin in southern NSW, where William and Joseph SIMPSON settled with their families. In 1857 SIMPSON was induced by settlers to set up his business at Lang’s Crossing-place, north of Deniliquin on the Murrumbidgee River. The site, in a deep bend of the river, had become a popular crossing-place for drovers moving stock to Victoria, and carriers servicing the surrounding pastoral holdings. In December 1857 Thomas SIMPSON took up residence at Lang’s Crossing-place and commenced the erection of a cottage and blacksmith’s shop. The entrepreneur and steam-boat owner Francis CADELL was building a store nearby at about the same time, and soon afterwards Henry LEONARD began construction of a hotel and punt in the vicinity of SIMPSON's buildings.

THOMAS SIMPSON, Early Black Candidate for School Board. ["Ottawa Herald," 05 Mar 1915, page 2, column 6] Thomas Simpson, one of the candidates for the school board, is the only colored boy that ever graduated from Ottawa High School. Although this class whose membership was fifty-five was the largest that has ever graduated from the High School, Mr. Simpson estimates that the total enrollment at that time was not more than seventy-five per cent of the present enrollment. Even then, it seemed to him, there were more students than could be adequately taken care of . In speaking of his connection with the High School Mr. Simpson says: "During my attendance there I met with but little evidence of racial prejudice. Ottawa High School is one institution which I shall always regard with deepest affection." Attorney F. A. Waddle graduated in 1879 wiht a class of eleven. The High School was held in one room on the third floor and the boys often thought that it took to long to go down stairs step by step as they should, so they took to the banisters. They would slide to the bottom and laugh at those who did not dare attempt the feat. the banisters and the newel posts in the Washington building are the same that these boys slid down so many years ago. At that time pupils where whipped for bad behaviour. go to top
