Stephen Smale is one of the great mathematicians of the 20th century. His work encompasses a wide variety of subjects: differential topology, dynamical systems, calculus of variations, theory of computation, mechanics and mathematical economy. In all these subjects he has left the imprint of a collection of fundamental results. He has obtained several distinctions, including the Fields Medal, the Veblen Prize, the Chauvenet Prize, the von Neumann Award and the National Medal of Science. This invaluable book contains the collected papers of Stephen Smale. These are divided into eight groups: topology; calculus of variations; dynamics; mechanics; economics; biology, electric circuits and mathematical programming; theory of computation; miscellaneous. In addition, each group contains one or two articles by world leaders on its subject which comment on the influence of Smale's work, and another article by Smale with his own retrospective views.

Stephen Smale: The Mathematician Who Broke the Dimension Barrier
by Steve Batterson
Reviewed by Shirley B. Gray
This biography of Stephen Smale will bother many readers. For those of us with a memory of the 60s, the reaction is certain to be both pain and nostalgia. For mathematicians in particular there are multiple layers of messages. We are asked to review the launch of a stellar career in research mathematics projected upon the planes of McCarthy era communism, the Free Speech Movement, and the push to include more women mathematicians amongst our inner circle. We are asked to factor in the nature of our institutions, including the National Academy of Sciences, the National Science Foundation, the administration of the University of California at Berkeley, the legends surrounding the absence of a Nobel Prize in mathematics, and the Fields Medal selection process. Batterson has done an outstanding job of collecting factual information on Smale's youth and education. He even attended his Grand Blanc Class of 1948 reunion. This information should be read by the rank and file of all undergraduate and graduate students in mathematics. Batterson uses Smale's youth to debunk the popular myth that one must demonstrate outstanding early talent to pursue mathematics research. Consider the following evidence:
  • "In retrospect, neither Smale nor anyone else was the mathematical genius."

Fields Medal
Historical Introduction
This is the original letter by Fields creating the endowment for the medals that bear his name. It is thought to have been written during the few months before his death. Notice that no mention is made about the age of the recipients (currently there is a 40 year-old limit), and that the medal should not be attached to any person, private or public, meaning that it shouldn't bear anybody's name. It is proposed to found two gold medals to be awarded at successive International Mathematical Congress for outstanding achievements in mathematics. Because of the multiplicity of the branches of mathematics and taking into account the fact that the interval between such congresses is four years it is felt that at least two medals should be available. The awards would be open to the whole world and would be made by an International Committee. The fund for the founding of the medals is constituted by balance left over after financing the Toronto congress held in 1924. This must be held in trust by the Government or by some body authorized by government to hold and invest such funds. It would seem that a dignified method for handling the matter and one which in this changing world should most nearly secure permanency would be for the Canadian Government to take over the fund and appoint as his custodian say the Prime Minister of the Dominion or the Prime Minister in association with the Minister of Finance. The medals would be struck at the Mint in Ottawa and the duty of the custodian would be simply to hand over the medals at the proper time to the accredited International Committee.

Stephen Smale Awarded National Medal of Science
In June 1996 recipients of the National Medal of Science, the highest honour in science and technology awarded in the United States, were announced. Amongst the eight recipients was STEPHEN SMALE Although Stephen Smale has worked in many areas, including differential topology, nonlinear analysis, economic theory, computation and mechanics, it is work in dynamical systems that will be best known to readers of UK Nonlinear News Smale's work on the structure stability of vector fields lead in 1960 to the construction of the horseshoe map[1,3] and his early study of chaotic phenomena. In 1966 Smale showed that structural stability was not dense[2] and in 1967 published a landmark survey article on hyperbolic systems[3] which outlined a number of outstanding problems, stimulating much of the work which followed in the next 20 years. Subsequently he has applied dynamical systems ideas to various physical processes, including the n-body problem and electric circuit theory[4], and to economics.
