This is a very important advance in the way medical discoveries are approached. This could mean the difference between life and death for you or your loved ones. Benefactor's Circle The Stephen Milne Society Memorial Sporting Clay Shoot, held on November 22nd, 2002, and the Gun Bash raffle (Nov. 23rd - Dec. 31st) have collectively raised an astonishing figure of $86,460! A huge THANK YOU to the Erie team that organized and promoted these fabulous events in memory of their courageous and dedicated friend Steve Milne. more On September 23, 2002, the second Friends of Steve Golf Outing took place at Olde Stonewall Golf Club. It was a wonderful celebration of friends who gathered to remember a great man who brought inspiration and courage into all of their lives. Thank you to each who participated in this event and a special note of grateful appreciation for the event organizers! $55,717.21!!! Erie Insurance: The Erie Family is saddened by the loss of our leader and friend Steve Milne. And yet we have hope and confidence about the work being done by ALS-TDF. We recognize the fight is not over for others, and thus we pledge our support in memory of Steve with the added hope that other individuals and organizations will do the same.

Speaker: Iosif Pinelis
Michigan Tech Title: Evolution of language: following Stephen Smale Date: Monday, April 22, 2002 Time: 1:05 pm Location: Abstract:
It is shown that the result presented by Stephen Smale in his talk given
recently to this department holds if the quadratic distance between
languages is replaced by a certain information distance. Also, it is
argued in favor of the latter distance. The talk is rather elementary
and accessible even for undergraduate students.

88. Notes On Chaos By Gleick
Stability in the sense of smale (stephen smale, UCBK) A system canbehave erratically, but the erratic behavior cannot be 'stable'.
http://ece.clemson.edu/crb/students/vilas/personal/scribbles/chaosGleick.htm
Chaos - Making of a New Science. James Gleick
Notes from the book
Chapter 1: The Butterfly Effect
The notion that a butterfly stirring the air today in Peking can transform storm systems next month in New York - non-linear systems that are highly sensitive to initial conditions. Similar behavior exhibited by pendulums - eqn: d )T Nonlinearity - the act of playing the game has a way of changing the rules - how friction on a moving body depends on speed and how speed in turn depends on friction. Example of a highly non-linear governing eqn: The Navier-Stokes eqn in fluid dynamics. Systems that never really reach a steady state - the Lorenzian waterwheel whose spin can reverse many times, never settling down to a steady state and never repeating itself in a predictable pattern. A small perturbance input may not blow up the system but the states may keep changing in unique ways within bounds - the Lorenzian Attracter. The behavior is chaotic, but there is still some strange sense of order and pattern - Refer the paper "Deterministic Nonperiodic Flow", Journal of Atmospheric Sciences 20 (1963), pp. 130-41. As an aside, 'order in chaos' is something that Michael Crichton talks about in the 'Jurassic Park'. Life exists at the edge of chaos....a slight disturbance either way (in the form of behavioral changes, disturbance in the delicate balance of the eco-system) can wipe out a species.

A list of 18 challenging problems for the twenty-first century proposed by Field medalist Steven Smale. These problems were inspired in part by Hilbert's famous list of problems presented in 1900 ( Hilbert's problems ), and in part in response to a suggestion by V. I. Arnold on behalf of the International Mathematical Union that mathematicians describe a number of outstanding problems for the 21st century.
