Home About RRA RRA Activities Information Repository ... Constitution of 1824 . Smith had a part in preparing the organic law that served as the constitution of the provisional government In establishing the provisional government the Consultation made an attempt to satisfy all factions. A majority of the members of the General Council Convention of 1836 had no time to devote to such petty squabbles, and the governor was never called upon to answer the charges made against him. Smith was not a member of the Convention of 1836 and had no place in the ad interim government organized by that body. His political eclipse, however, was of short duration. His friends entered his name as a candidate for the presidency in the election of 1836 and, in spite of the fact that he asked that his name be withdrawn and announced his support of Gen. Sam Houston , he received some votes. He served as secretary of the treasury during the first Houston administration. He was, of course, unable either to balance the budget or to give value to the currency of the republic. His work, however, met with the approval of Houston and of Congress. In 1840 Smith was elected to Congress and served one term in the House of Representatives. He was made chairman of the committee on finance and is credited with introducing several measures of importance. After serving this term in Congress, Smith retired to his home with no intention of leaving it again. He sought no other public office and lived in retirement until 1849, when he succumbed to gold fever and set out for California. He reached California but found no gold. He died in a mining camp in Los Angeles County on March 4, 1851.

SMITH, HENRY BOYNTON
without knowing that any of the money would be employed in an attempt to incite a slave insurrection. Under the excitement following the raid on Harper’s Ferry he became temporarily insane, and for several weeks was confined in an asylum in Utica. He favoured a vigorous prosecution of the Civil War, but at its close advocated a mild policy toward the late Confederate states, declaring that part of the guilt of slavery lay upon the North. He even became one of the securities for Jefferson Davis, thereby incurring the resentment of Northern radical leaders. In religion as in politics Gerrit Smith was a radical. Believing that sectarianism was sinful, he separated from the Presbyterian Church in 1843, and was one of the founders of the Church at Peterboro, a non-sectarian institution open to all Christians of whatever shade of belief. His private benef actions were boundless; of his gifts he kept no record, but their value is said to have exceeded $8,ooo,ooo. Though a man of great wealth his life was one of marked simplicity. He died on the 28th of’ December 1874, while on a visit to relatives in New York City. See 0. B. Frothingham, Gerrit Smith: a Biography (New York, 879).

These papers were received by the Archives in at least 3 accessions. The papers which appear to have been received first showed some organization, but the papers which appear to have been received later were very disorganized. During processing in 1996, an attempt to preserve original order was made whenever any original order could be discerned, and material was rarely transferred between folders.

Henry Emerson SMITH Researched by Susan Harnwell Henry Emerson SMITH was born 26 Apr 1841 in North Brookfield, MA, the son of Benjamin Smith. The 1850 US Census - MA, Worcester Co., [North Brookfield - Roll 343, p. 11 (enumerated 23 Aug 1850) Dwelling No. 136, Family No. 200] shows:
  • Benjamin SMITH, 38, M, Shoemaker, $1000 worth in property, b. N. Hampshire Lydia, 24, F, b. Vermont Charlotte, 15, F, b. MA (noted as being in school) Henry E., 9, b. MA (noted as being in school) Wilber M., 5, b. MA (noted as being in school) Mary E., 1, b. MA
The family group enumerated in this census return suggests that Lydia Smith may not be Henry's mother, but rather a step-mother. However, to date (July 2000), I have not been able to access the documents to prove or disprove this. Photo courtesey of the Mark Savolis Collection. On 12 July 1861 Henry Emerson Smith enlisted as a Private in Co. F, of the 15 th th is difficult to determine. Although he appears to have been with the unit during engagements like Balls Bluff, Fredericksburg, Antietam, Gettysburg, etc., he also appears to have defied the odds. The only wound noted in his file was received while he was with the 20 th Massachusetts. "On the 24

SMITH, HENRY (1904-1991). Henry (Buster) Smith, jazz qv qv who played in Benny Goodman's band. For an African-American in the 1930s, Buster Smith received incredible respect from all musicians. But by 1941 fame and touring were no longer his first priority. He returned to Dallas. Remaining active in the music scene, he wrote for jazz and blues bands, played often, and taught many young Texas musicians. Aaron (T-Bone) Walker qv was one example. By 1959 Atlantic Records had convinced Buster to record his first session in Fort Worth. Some of the songs from the session were "Kansas City Riffs," Buster's Tune," "E Flat Boogie," and "September Song." Though it was his first 33 rpm record, he could be found on 78 rpm records from the Blue Devils, Pete Johnson's Boogie-Woogie Boys, Eddie Durham, qv Snub Mosely, Bon and His Buddies, and the Don Redman Orchestra. An auto accident in the 1960s disabled him from ever playing saxophone again. He turned to bass guitar to keep current within the music business in Dallas, where his musical genius and influence was felt for years. Buster led a dance band until 1980. He died of a heart attack in Dallas on August 10, 1991. BIBLIOGRAPHY: John Chilton
