PROFESSOR IAN SNEDDON - KEELE'S FIRST MATHS PROFESSOR Professor Ian Sneddon, Keele's first maths professor and - in the words of the Times - one of Scotland's most eminent mathematicians, has died at the age of 80. During the war he was a scientific officer with the Ministry of Supply, where he was concerned with the mathematical theory of elasticity relating to armaments. After that he spent a year at Bristol working on nuclear physics, and then four years at Glasgow, at his old university, as a lecturer in natural philosophy, before being recruited by Lord Lindsay to the University College of North Staffordshire at the early age of thirty as one of the youngest of the founder-professors. At Keele he was much loved and respected by the early students, one of whom describes him as "quite a colourful character as well as a most able mathematician". He was Senior Tutor from 1954 to 1956. After six years he left Staffordshire to return to Glasgow as Simson Professor of Mathematics, but he never lost his lively affection for and interest in Keele. After he left Keele Ian spent the rest of his career at Glasgow; at one time he declined the vice-chancellorship of an English university, preferring to remain in Glasgow and devote himself to mathematics. In the course of his career he was the author of various books on mathematics, and of scientific papers on the quantum theory of nuclei, the theory of elasticity and boundary value problems.

    Synonyms:
Dermatosis pustulosa subcornealis, la pustulose sous-cornée (French), subcorneal pustular dermatosis. Associated persons: Louis Adolphus Duhring Ian Bruce Sneddon Daryl Sheldon Wilkinson Description: Chronic recidivating pustulous dermatosis of unknown origin with eruptions usually involving the axillae, groins, abdomen, submammary areas, the flexor aspects of the limbs, and, less commonly, the palms and soles. The course is quite similar to that of dermatitis herpetiformis, but there is rarely itching. Predominantly in women (4: 1); onset after 40 years of age. Seldom in children. Bibliography:

    Ian Naismith Sneddon
Born: 8 Dec 1919 in Glasgow, Scotland
Died: 4 Nov 2000 in Glasgow, Scotland Ian Sneddon attended Hyndland Secondary School in Glasgow and from there he entered the University of Glasgow. His interests at university were divided between mathematics and physics and he graduated in 1940 with First Class Honours in these two topics. After graduating from Glasgow, Sneddon was awarded a Bryce Fellowship which allowed him continue his studies at Trinity College, Cambridge. However, as was the custom at that time, he took the undergraduate courses at Cambridge leading to the Mathematical Tripos. Of course World War II meant that much of Europe was on a war footing even before Sneddon entered Cambridge and it was inevitable that he would soon end up undertaking war work. Indeed after taking Part II of the Mathematical Tripos in 1942 he was assigned to duties with the Ministry of Supply as a scientific officer and he was sent to the Cavendish Laboratory. His remarkable talents in applied mathematics and physics were quickly directed towards military problems requiring these skills and he began to work on a project examining how to penetrate armour. Before this it is doubtful whether he had developed a particular interest in problems concerning elasticity, but the work he began at the Cavendish Laboratory so fascinated him that he continued to have a deep interest in problems of elasticity throughout his career. In 1943 Sneddon married Mary Macgregor.
