LLAIS Y MYNYDD ISSUE 30 14 Peaks Preperation, Compass Kid, Condolonces, My 14 Peaks 2002, ... Mission to Croagh Patrick 14 Peaks Preparation th Peak, which most people think is Garnedd Uchaf. If he had been here now he would have caused a commotion but I just sat there wet and damp, nursing my bruised and bloodied knee and thinking of home, which was a long way away. I put on my best brave face and left the refuge, striding into the sort of weather that the Carneddau flora and fauna are well used to. On arrival at the ‘15 th peak’ and where I had to leave the main Carneddau backbone the weather seemed to be lifting. Would you believe it, 40 minutes later I was out of the cloud and looking back towards a dark grey bank of cloud and where only a short time ago I had been sitting, shivering and stuffing cold bread into my mouth. A couple of hours later I was relating my story in the comfort of the Douglas Arms. 14 Peaks? It will be a doddle. Berwyn. Back to top Will the air of despondency and the fog of gloom that now envelopes Bethesda never lift? That is the question worrying its beleaguered citizens. As Chief Inspector Glyn Ap Owen Ap Hughes, five fellow officers and two brave volunteers, namely Mr Kevin Thomas and Mr Ian Sneddon set off to hunt down the so called ‘Compass Kid Butcher and Faint o Gloch Sned’ hopes were high. When the eight stout souls began their ascent to the Carneddau Killing grounds it seemed to the terrified villagers that their heroes were treading a spiral staircase of hope. Little did they realise as they waved the brave souls goodbye that the next few hours would turn that spiral staircase of hope into a whirlpool of despair.

SPECIAL REPORTS Working Parents Investor's Centre NI_AD('BottomLeft'); July 14, 2002 Summer reading special: Exclusive story by Ian Rankin The great escape starts here, with an exclusive Inspector Rebus story, Window of Opportunity by Ian Rankin Bernie Few’s jailbreaks were an art. And over the years he had honed his art. His escapes from prison, his shrugging off of guards and prison officers, his vanishing acts were the stuff of lights-out stories in jails the length and breadth of Scotland. He was called “The Grease-Man”, “The Blink”, and many other names, including the obvious “Houdini” and the not-so-obvious “Claude” (Claude Rains having starred as the original Invisible Man). Bernie Few was beautiful. As a petty thief he was hopeless, but after capture he started to show his real prowess. He wasn’t made for being a housebreaker; but he surely did shine as a jailbreaker. He’d stuffed himself into rubbish bags and mail sacks, taken the place of a corpse from one prison hospital, squeezed his wiry frame out of impossibly small windows (sometimes buttering his naked torso in preparation), and crammed himself into ventilation shafts and heating ducts.
