by Vladimir G Maz'ya (Linköping University, Sweden) (St Petersburg State University, Russia)
The spaces of functions with derivatives in L p , called the Sobolev spaces, play an important role in modern analysis. During the last decades, these spaces have been intensively studied and by now many problems associated with them have been solved. However, the theory of these function classes for domains with nonsmooth boundaries is still in an unsatisfactory state. In this book, which partially fills this gap, certain aspects of the theory of Sobolev spaces for domains with singularities are studied. We mainly focus on the so-called imbedding theorems, extension theorems and trace theorems that have numerous applications to partial differential equations. Some of such applications are given. Much attention is also paid to counter examples showing, in particular, the difference between Sobolev spaces of the first and higher orders. A considerable part of the monograph is devoted to Sobolev classes for parameter dependent domains and domains with cusps, which are the simplest non-Lipschitz domains frequently used in applications. This book will be interesting not only to specialists in analysis but also to postgraduate students.

Nikolay Brusentsov-
the Creator of the Trinary Computer
On June 21, 1941, the day before the beginning of the Great Patriotic War of the USSR Nick Brusentsov was an eighth-form (equivalent to 10th grade in the USA) schoolboy living in Dnepropetrovsk. He participated in competitions of young musicians, conducting a chorus which sang his own composition about Dzerzhinsk metallurgy workers. Everything was remarkable.
However, the next morning, together with the other children who had arrived from Dneprodzerzhinsk, he was urgently sent back home. He was already home when he heard Molotov's radio speech. The words "The Victory will be ours!" and Borodin's Bogatyrskaya symphony which followed were memorable for him.
Thus ended Nikolai's childhood.
Six months later, in February 1943, at the age of 18, Nikolay was drafted into the Army and sent to radio classes in Sverdlovsk. Six months later he was sent to a rifle division. The division formed near Tula. Two weeks later they were mobilized to Nevel where our troops were semi-surrounded by Germans.
Then, the war became easier - with successful offensives in Byelorussia, the Baltic republics, and East Prussia. The young soldier, yesterday a schoolboy, was awarded with a medal "For Bravery" and the Red Star Order. Of the twenty-five 18- year old soldiers who formed the division in August 1943, only five remained. Here, on the outskirts of Konigsberg, Brusentsov greeted that day that would be bright and memorable for the rest of his life, Victory Day.

Mathematician Report Index Below is a list of mathematicians. You may choose from this list or report on a mathematician not listed here. In either case, you must discuss with me the mathematician you have chosen prior to starting your report. No two students may write a report on the same mathematician. I would advise you to go to the library before choosing your topic as there might not be much information on the mathematician you have chosen. Also, you should determine the topic early in the term so that you can "lock-in" your report topic!! The report must include: 1. The name of the mathematician. 2. The years the mathematician was alive. 3. A biography. 4. The mathematician's major contribution(s) to mathematics and an explanation of the importance. 5. A historical perspective during the time the mathematician was alive.
Some suggestions on the historical perspective might be:
(a) Any wars etc.
(b) Scientific breakthroughs of the time
(c) Major discoveries of the time
(d) How did this mathematician change history etc.

    Bulletin No. 48

    June 2000
    ICMI Executive Committees 1908-1998
During the fourth International Congress of Mathematicians, held in Rome in 1908, the following resolution was adopted:
"The Congress, recognizing the importance of a comparative study on the methods and plans of teaching mathematics at secondary schools, charges Professors F. Klein, G. Greenhill, and Henri Fehr to constitute an International Commission to study these questions and to present a report to the next Congress."

This resolution was submitted on the initiative of David Eugene Smith, who had suggested the idea of such an international commission three years earlier in the journal L'Enseignement Mathématique, in response to an article by Fehr. It marks the inception of the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction - although the Commission was known in its earlier years as the "International Commission on the Teaching of Mathematics".
Over the years various Executives Committees of the Commission (first known as "Central Committees") have succeeded one another. The list of their officers and members appears below. This information has been gathered from the following sources:
    • Georges de Rham, "L'Enseignement Mathématique - Revue internationale et la Commission internationale de l'enseignement mathématique (CIEM) - Notice historique", ICMI Bulletin 7 (1976) 29-34.

Russian scientists see flying saucers

By Sergei Blagov
MOSCOW - A group of Russian scientists has come up with sensational claims of fundamental discoveries. However, their assertions provide more questions than answers about the current, deplorable state of Russian science.
The group, headed by Professor Valerian Sobolev, claims "seven major discoveries". One of these relates to a new electrochemical process, which allows production of new, previously unknown types of materials from silicon. Sobolev, who heads the Material Technology Research Center in Volgograd, Central Russia, claims that his new materials may contain electromagnetic impulses and could therefore become a source of virtually free electric energy.
Sobolev says that his know-how may help to build new types of engineless flying machines evocative of flying saucers. He and his team have sent a letter informing Russian President Valdimir Putin of their "discoveries" - casually pointing out that commercialization of their know-how would require some US$2 million.
The Russian scientists say they can build generators of free electric energy on a commercial basis within 18 months. However, established researchers remain skeptical. "They are yet to show us any concrete proof," said prominent physicist Sergei Kapitsa. The talk about new materials and sources of energy is either "an honest mistake or an intentional deception", he added.
