When did my Somerville's first arrive in North America? Family lore has it that it was in 1712. But for our particular branch of the family, evidence points to the pre-Confederation arrival at Quebec in 1858 of Alexander, his wife Emma Binks and six children: James, Bridget Emma, Francis, Alexander, Roger Mowbry, and Henry Drummond. Apparently Alexander, youngest of 11 children was preceeded by his older brother Peter in 1833. The family origins are from Scotland as evidenced by the writings of Alexander himself in his book "The Autobiography of a Working Man" first published in 1848. Alexander tells his children that there is a range of hills in the middle of Scotland called the Ochills out of which a rapid running river called the Devon flows, tumbling headlong over linns and through chasms in its progress to the low country. Near to where this river is wildest, in the parish of Muckhart, their grandfather James was born in 1760. The place was an upland farm, called Nether-Aichlin-Sky. here.

Sir Gaulter de Somerville accompanied the Duke of Normandy, William the Conqueror, to England in 1066. One of his descendants Philip of Whichnow , in Staffordshire, instituted the gift of a side of bacon called the Dunmow Flitch which is still given today to husbands and wives who have lived together a year and a day without strife or disagreement. William de Somerville , Gualters second son, came to Scotland with David I and Received lands near Carnwath in Clydesdale. William died around 1142 and was buried at Melrose Abbey. William de Somerville, who, according to tradition, killed the last serpent in Scotland, obtained the lands of Linton around 1174 from Malcolm IV.
