The Regent conquers, and the Frenchmen fly.
Now help, ye charming spells and periapts;
And ye choice spirits that admonish me,
And give me signs of future accidents.
Thunder You speedy helpers, that are substitutes
Under the lordly monarch of the north,
Appear and aid me in this enterprise.
Enter Fiends This speedy and quick appearance argues proof
of your accustomed diligence to me.
Now, ye familiar spirits, that are culled Out of the powerful regions under earth, Help me this once, that France may get the field. They walk, and speak not O, hold me not with silence over-long! Where I was wont to feed you with my blood, I'll lop a member off and give it you In earnest of a further benefit, So you do condescend to help me now. They hang their heads No hope to have redress? My body shall Pay recompense, if you will grant my suit.

Add. MS 7961: Correspondence and Papers of the Eyre Family, 1782-1916
CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY
This collection of Eyre family correspondence was presented to the Library in April 1974 by Pauleen, Lady Chapman, in accordance with the wishes of her late step-sister Mrs A. M. H. Westland. Mrs Westland is understood to have worked on the present collection in her spare time, and she was aware that an important group of papers relating to the Thornton family - closely related to, and neighbours of the Eyres - had recently been deposited in the Library (Add. MS 7674). She appears to have inherited the papers from her sister-in-law Miss Mildred Westland, but it has not proved possible to trace any earlier reference to this material. The Eyre correspondence complements both the Thornton papers, and also the papers of William Smith MP and his family (Add. MS 7621) . Together these holdings illustrate the activities of the so-called Clapham Sect, a group of prosperous, evangelical families which flourished in South London at the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The collection consists of some 250 items, and is open for consultation in the Manuscripts Reading Room by all holders of full Library Reader's Tickets. A detailed catalogue is available.

The Golden Fleece and Whitbourne's Discourse can be found at Dr. Hans Rollman's site, Printed heritage of Newfoundland and Labrador.
William Vaughan and New Cambriol Sir William Vaughan (1575-1641) was a Welsh lawyer, scholar and poet. Deeply concerned about poor economic conditions in Wales, he became interested in overseas colonization. He decided to try and plant a colony in Newfoundland because it was easily accessible and possessed an established fishery. In 1616 he purchased from the Newfoundland Company the Avalon Peninsula south of a line from Caplin Bay (now Calvert) across to Placentia Bay. He called the area "New Cambriol" - a "little Wales" in the New World. The following year he sent out a few ill-prepared colonists to the harbour of Aquaforte, where they spent the winter huddled in cabins built by migratory fishermen for summer use. In 1618 Vaughan hired the experienced fishing master Richard Whitbourne to bring colonists and provisions to the precarious settlement, and appointed him governor. Whitbourne did his best to reorganize the colony by moving it to better quarters in Renews. Unfortunately, he had to deal with a piratical attack on one of his ships by deserters from Sir Walter Raleigh's Guiana fleet. In the end only six colonists spent the winter of 1619 at Renews and they abandoned the settlement the following year.

Murdoch There are several reasons why a reappraisal of William Booth's Darkest England and the Way Out (1890) is needed. The book which "aroused more public interest than any other book since Henry George's Progress and Poverty, " according to Victor Bailey, set out to end unemployment in Britain by progressively moving the unemployed from city workshops to farm colonies, then to overseas colonies. Let me propose two reasons for why a reassessment is needed. First, historians have neglected this 1890 scheme that provides the foundation of Salvation Army social services and an example of late 19th century Wesleyan interest in social reform. Salvationists, who have seen Booth's motives as primarily evangelistic, even in millennial terms, locate the ideological base for the Darkest England Scheme in Booth's Wesleyan and postmillennial theology and his personal encounter with urban culture.
