Thursday, 16 March, 2000, 17:53 GMT Mir actor remains grounded
Two cosmonauts will film footage on Mir next month
A project to send a Russian actor onto the Mir space station to film part of a movie has collapsed because of lack of funds.
The joint Russo-British production team behind The Final Journey was hoping to send Vladimir Steklov, 52, up to the space station as part of a mission pencilled in for next month.
British producer John Daly and Russian director Yuri Kara had said Gary Oldman and Sean Penn were to star in the film, alongside Russian stars Mikhail Ulyanov and Leonid Korolev.
They claimed to have made an initial payment to the Russian Air and Space Agency to secure Steklov's passage onto Mir alongside cosmonauts Sergei Zaletin and Alexander Kaleri.
Vladimir Steklov: Will be staying on earth But officials said they had not even been paid for Steklov's training, let alone the bill for the flight. "Vladimir Steklov will not go to Mir as earlier planned because of the failure to meet the terms of the contract," the agency's spokesman Konstantin Kreidenko said.

Mir could soon be in a starring movie role
Russian movie actor Vladimir Steklov is confident he will soon be making cinematic history by starring in a thriller aboard the Mir space station. The Russo-British production team of The Final Journey want to put Steklov, 52, on board the ageing Mir space station - which has been dogged by breakdowns and repeatedly patched up. Hollywood stars Gary Oldman and Sean Penn will star in the film on Earth, alongside Steklov and fellow Russian actors Mikhail Ulyanov and Leonid Korolev. Steklov said he began training two years ago, and he expects he will join cosmonauts Sergey Zaletin and Alexander Kaleri for the 45-day mission. Steklov has been training for two years
The Russian Space Agency has not yet given the final go-ahead for the actor to join the mission, due to blast-off on 31 March. But the agency's Alexander Gorbunov expressed his optimism for The Final Journey.

The Academy in 1920s-1930s. Establishment of Academies of Sciences of Soviet Republics The revolutionary period of February-October 1917 influenced greatly the development of scientific and organizational creativity of scholars. Leading members of the Academy Sergey Oldenburg, Vladimir Vernadsky, and others) who had started, long before this period, to mould the image of science as a powerful social and reforming force able to influence all spheres of social life, took a most active part in the new construction of the state, striving to reform the educational and scientific systems of Russia.
However, complex and contradictory processes of mutual adaptation of science and new structures of power that started after the October revolutions drastically changed the academic community: in the proletarian state, science became socialized, and the authorities were able to block or, conversely, stimulate the development of specific directions of research.
Despite this, the Academy of Sciences, unlike many other state institutions, did not think of directly sabotaging the steps of the Soviet power. The algorithm of attitude of academic scholars toward the authorities was unequivocally phrased by the permanent secretary of RAS, full member of the Academy Sergey Oldenburg on December 29, 1917: "Those who work in the Russian Academy of Science must say that notwithstanding the events they worked, are working and will be working for the Fatherland and for Science…"

Russia cancels actor's movie mission on space station Mir
By VLADIMIR ISACHENKOV, Associated Press Writer MOSCOW (AP) Actor Vladimir Steklov was supposed to blast off to the Mir next month to portray a renegade cosmonaut who won't leave the space station, but now Russia won't let him even get off Earth, a space official said Thursday. The space movie in which Steklov was to have starred was the latest in a series of unorthodox proposals for resuscitating the dormant space station with private money. But Konstantin Kreidenko, a spokesman for the Russian Aerospace Agency, said that Steklov "will not go to Mir as earlier planned because of the failure to meet the terms of the contract." Kreidenko declined to give details, but it appears that Steklov's producers couldn't pay for his ticket. Although producers of the movie, tentatively titled "The Last Journey," claimed they made an initial payment to get the project underway, Russian space officials complained they haven't even been paid for Steklov's training, let alone the multimillion-dollar bill for the flight.

Report of visit of Vladimir Vatutin
