University of Texas This paper is about the 'calculational proof format' introduced by Dijkstra and Scholten on the basis of ideas due to Feijen. Their work has had an impact on the presentation of proofs in computer science research, and even on undergraduate education in computer science. These ideas can be also viewed as an interesting discovery in logic, although this fact has so far remained largely unnoticed. Inventing proofs of predicate formulas in a Hilbert style deduction system is known to be an unpleasant task unless one uses metamathematical tools, such as the deduction theorem. On the other hand, proving formulas in a natural deduction system is relatively easy. The role of the deduction theorem and of natural deduction is determined by the fact that they provide a mechanism for discharging assumptions. We argue, however, using the work done by Dijkstra and Scholten, that the importance of assumptions in formal proofs is overrated: with the right choice of inference rules, proving predicate formulas is easy even without introducing assumptions (and without the use of auxiliary derivable objects such as sequents).

    Funktionaalianalyysin seminaari
    Seminar in Functional Analysis
    Historia ja tausta
Funktionaalianalyysin seminaarin perusti Klaus Vala noin 1970. Seminaari on toiminut ilman taukoa tästä ajankohdasta, ja se on näin yksi laitoksen vanhimmista nykyisin toimivista tutkimusseminaareista. Funktionaalianalyysin seminaari on olemassaolonsa aikana kouluttanut merkittävän joukon suomalaisia matemaatikoita. Seminaarista ovat olleet virallisesti vastuussa, eri aikoina ja kombinaatioina, (ainakin) Klaus Vala, Heikki Apiola, Kari Astala, Lassi Päivärinta, Jari Taskinen ja Hans-Olav Tylli
    History and background
The Seminar in Functional Analysis was founded by Klaus Vala about 1970. The seminar has operated continuously since that date, which makes it one of the oldest current research seminars of the department. The Seminar in Functional Analysis has educated a sizable number of Finnish mathematicians. The following mathematicians have, during different times and in various combinations, been officially responsible for the running of the seminar: Klaus Vala, Heikki Apiola, Kari Astala, Lassi Päivärinta, Jari Taskinen

    Oligarch: Behind the scenes
Komsomolskaya Pravda, 14 September 2001 When we visited the set of Oligarch director Pavel Lungin Vladimir, as Platon, gets ready for a jaunt on an elephant to remind his contemporaries of the first oligarchs. Lungin sat next to a monitor, confidently directing the proceedings. Mashkov was just about to start the scene, when suddenly the sound of a motor was heard as the street-sweepers, who gather rubbish on backstreets of Arkangelsk, passed by. The screenplay for Oligarch was written by Pavel Lungin and Aleksandr Borodiansky, based on the novel The Big Slice by Yuly Dubov, a director of LogoVAZ. Boris Berezovsky Svadba (The Wedding) to Oligarch dachas: well-off people love to invite Chani to their parties. Incidentally, while filming the scenes with the orchestra, Chani unexpectedly began to conduct with her trunk, as if imitating the motions of conductor Sergei Skripkya. Pavel Lungin decided to include this scene in the film, so Chani was booked for one extra day of filming. Is the hero, played by Vladimir Mashkov, copied from Boris Berezovsky?
