Home Page dedicated to Simon Stevin (1548-1620) In 1998 we celebrate Simon Stevin's 450-th birthday. In the low countries he is not only remarkable for his contributions to mathematics, physics and many other fields of knowledge, but also for his influence on the Dutch language. Like his contemporary Galilei he preferred to publish his findings in his native language and he coined new Dutch terms when necessary, many of which are still in use today. Those who see the WWW as the means par excellence for the dissemination of knowledge will find it appropriate that a home page be dedicated to this remarkable figure who did so much to spread knowledge using the means that were modern in his own time. We hope to extend and improve this home page in the course of the memorial year 1998. One aspect of the Dutch version of this home page might escape those who are not familiar with that language: In what we hope is a playfull appreciation of Stevin's significance for the Dutch language, we will avoid the use of foreign words in the Dutch version of this home page. This makes the enterprise of building this home page similar to Stevin's work in one respect: whereas he had to coin new words for notions that were commonly expressed in Latin, we will have to coin new words for concepts that are normally referred to by English words. Click here for the annotated English translation INTRODUCTION Simon Stevin for some time seems to have contemplated writing a treatise on music. If ever he accomplished this design, the work must obviously have been lost. Only some fragments were discovered in 1884 by D. Bierens de Haan in a collection of miscellaneous manuscripts, which belonged to Constantijn Huygens (1596-1687), the well-known secretary to the Princes of Orange, who, at the same time, was a gifted poet and musician. (Cf. this edition, Vol. I, p. 33, work XV). This collection, now in the possession of the Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen at Amsterdam, is preserved at the Koninklijke Bibliotheek at The Hague, The Netherlands. Stevin often divided his books into a main part, containing the established doctrine, and an appendix dealing with controversial matters, in order "not to obscure the instruction by dispute", as he says. Accordingly we find two main parts, or sketches thereof, and two appendices. Neither of these treatises is complete, and in the plan they show an appreciable difference in the stress laid on certain points. One draft is in Stevin's own handwriting. It dwells rather more upon discussions than the other. This part will be reproduced hereafter. The other draft, which has been copied as if in preparation for print, indulges rather more in elementary definitions. It shows some gaps, presumably to be filled up later.

Er ist der Sohn von Anthon und Catharina van der Poort - Hubert. Über seine Jugend ist wenig bekannt, man wei b jedoch, dass er Latein und Griechisch studierte, aber schon früh zeigte sich, dass er eine Begabung für Mathematik hatte. Später war er Buchhalter und Kassierer in einem Handelsamt in Antwerpen. Er führte die italienische Methode der doppelten Buchhaltung in den Niederlanden ein. Nachher wurde er Beamter beim "Brugse Vrije". Nach der Einsetzung des Herzogs Alva ging er auf Reisen nach Polen, Deutschland, Skandinavien und Preu b en. Er verliess das Land aus Protest gegen die Inquisition. Es wurde gesagt, dass er ein Ketzer war, aber bis heute ist nicht bekannt, ob er dem katholischen Glauben abschwörte. Manche sagen er floh vor der Gewalt, der die Protestanten ausgesetzt waren. Man wei b jedoch nicht, was seine wirkliche Auffassung war.

Hij is een zoon van Anthon en Catharina van der Poort filia Hubert. Over zijn jeugd is niet veel bekend, men weet echter wel dat hij Latijn en Grieks studeerde, maar reeds vroeg bleek dat hij aanleg had voor wiskunde. Later was hij boekhouder en kassier op een handelskantoor in Antwerpen. Hij voerde de Italiaanse methode van dubbel boekhouden in de Nederlanden in. Daarna werd hij klerk op een kantoor in het Brugse vrije. Na de komst van Alva trok hij op reis naar Polen, Duitsland, Scandinavië en Pruisen. Hij verliet het land uit protest tegen de inquisitie en de bloedraad. Er werd beweerd dat hij een "ketter" was, maar het is niet bekend dat hij het katholieke geloof afzwoer. Volgens sommigen vluchtte hij voor het geweld waarvan de protestanten het slachtoffer waren. Men weet echter niet wat zijn echte godsdienst was. Simon Stevin vestigde zich omstreeks 1580 in Leiden, waar hij les gaf om zijn brood te verdienen.
