Het Simon Stevin Meesterschap is een eretitel die de Technologiestichting STW verleent aan zeer prominente technisch-wetenschappelijke onderzoekers aan de Nederlandse universiteiten en de para-universitaire instituten. De Technologiestichting STW kent sinds 1998 het programma Simon Stevin Meesterschap. De beste technisch-wetenschappelijke onderzoekers die bij de STW onderzoeksaanvragen indienen komen voor deze grootste Nederlandse prijs in de technologie in aanmerking. Zij ontvangen bedrag van een half miljoen euro, vrij te besteden aan onderzoek naar keuze en een bronzen sculptuur van kunstenaar Rob Raaijmakers. Tot op heden heeft de STW de volgende personen het predikaat Simon Stevin Meester verleend. Lecture 11 Simon Stevin's Introduction of decimals. Background The period 13501600 is known as the Renaissance. There was a rebirth in Europe of a spirit of enquiry and reason in both Science and the Arts music, painting and literature. It was an age of exploration and the growth of nationalism. In mathematics, it marks the first time European mathematicians had ambitions and confidence to go beyond the Greeks. At the same time, close study of Greek texts from Byzantium and the Arabs began. With the growth of international trade and warfare, there was a need for many to understand arithmetic and geometry. New methods for Algebra were invented in Italy, (Pacioli, 1500, Del Ferro, 1520, Tartaglia, 1530, Cardano 1540 and Bombelli, 1550). These included solutions by radicals of cubic and quartic polynomials. In France (Chuquet, 1480, manipulation of exponents), Germany (Rudolff, Stifel 1520, cos algebra) and England (Recorde, 1540). Simon Stevin (15481620) was born in Flanders (Belgium) but spent his adult life in the service of the Republic of the Netherlands. He was a military engineer and tutor in mathematics and adviser in finance and navigation to the rulers William of Orange and Maurice of Nassau. He organized the school of engineering at the University of Leiden and wrote textbooks. His most important work was "De Thiende", translated as " Art of Tenths". Elektrotechniek, Universiteit Twente, MESA+ onderzoeksinstituut patterned media ), het verbeteren ervan en ook het ontwikkelen van uiterst gevoelige sensoren behoort tot het onderzoeksveld van Lodder's groep. Een uitvinding die de groep internationaal op de kaart zette, is de spin valve transistor , een uiterst gevoelige magneetsensor waarover in het blad Science werd gepubliceerd. In een lopend STW-project wordt dit concept verder ontwikkeld. Ook leverde prof. Lodder een belangrijke bijdrage aan de ontwikkeling van de magnetische kracht microscoop ( magnetic force microsc ope), waarvoor de groep onder meer twee nieuwe tips (aftasters van een oppervlak waarvan vervolgens een beeld wordt verkregen) ontwikkelde. De beide patenten die hieruit voortvloeiden worden overgenomen door NanoSensors, wereldmarktleider in magnetische tip-fabricage. Universiteit Twente Home News items Education ... Opendagplus 24 mei 2003 Two Simon Stevin Masters at MESA+ The Technology Foundation STW has awarded prof.dr.ir. Albert van den Berg and prof.dr. Cock Lodder the Simon Stevin Masterhood. This is the highest Dutch award for technical-scientific research. On 3 October both recipients were presented with the Simon Stevin sculpture by STW-direcotr drs. Erik van de Linde, and they will each receive half a million euros for their research. Both professors work for the research institute MESA+ and will spend the money on nanotechnology. Albert van den Berg will use the contribution for the project NanoScan: he is developing a system to obtain fluids for analysis from a single cell. In future it will be possible to painlessly extract miniscule amounts of blood with very small needles. Van den Berg has developed pumps that pump nanolitres or even picolitres. Cock Lodder is looking for new ways to store information. The hard drive has seen better days, and Lodder is now amongst others researching probe recording: writing and reading information through hundreds of tiny needles simultaneously. Vereniging Simon Stevin KLIK HIER VOOR DE WEBSITE VAN DE VERENIGING Het begon allemaal in 1961, in Oudenbosch (Noord-Brabant). In een toenmalig klooster werd door twee broeders de 'Volkssterrenwacht Simon Stevin'opgericht. In 1969 kregen ze in het klooster zoveel bezoekers dat de sterrenwacht naar een eigen terrein. Dit vonden ze in 1969 ook. Dit is het terein aan de Bovenstraat te Hoeven, waar nu Quasar gevestigd is in het voormalige gebouw van Volkssterrenwacht Simon Stevin. Nadat in 1994 er nieuwbouw was neer gezet (20 april 1994 werd de nieuwbouw door Koningin Beatrix geopend.), ging de Volkssterrewacht Simon Stevin maart 1998 failliet. Er is toen een koper gevonden voor de sterrewacht. Dit is Dhr. Slager van de Molecaten Groep. Door het failliet gaan van de sterrewacht hebben de vrijwilligers de Vereniging Simon Stevin opgericht. Deze vrijwilligers mogen gebruik blijven maken van het gebouw van Quasar. Zij zetten hun activiteiten verder voort. Klik hier voor de website van de vereniging Wie was Simon Stevin? Simon Stevin was een man die leefde in de 16e eeuw. Hij was geen groot astronoom. Hij deed wel wat aan astronomie, maar niet veel. Daar is hij ook niet bekent om. In zijn tijd werd alles in de wetenschap in het latijn opgeschreven. Mensen die niet hoor geschoold waren kunden dus geen kennis nemen van de wetenschap. Simon Stevin was de eerste die het latijn omzette in het begrijpelijke Nederlands. Dit was zijn doel, maak alle kennis bereikbaar en begrijpelijk voor iedereen. Vandaar dat de sterrenwacht en de vereniging zijn naam draagt. De moeilijke astronomie moet makkelijk en begrijpelijk aan de leek worden uitgedragen.

There he started publishing on very different scientific subjects: civil engineering, construction of buildings and fortresses, city planning, logistics, arithmetic, politics. He worked for the Dutch Prince Maurits on his campaigns to chase the Spanish occupation of the Low Lands. Stevin favoured the use of the mother-tongue (ic Dutch) for scientific publications. As he states: this makes it easier to formulate the contents of one's thoughts. One of his publications is devoted to this subject. Simon Stevin foundation De Simon Stevin foundation has the objective to promote the study, the conservation c.q. the restoration of fortifications (old, out of military use), as memorials of history and as monument of nature (art.1 of the statutes) Our association was founded in 1964 by the Vlaamse Toeristenbond (Flemish Tourist Union) - Vlaamse Automobilistenbond (Flemish Driver Union) and called to Simon Stevin (Brugge 1548-1620), the founder of fortification in the Netherlands. Our association is interested in the fortifications in Flanders, Belgium and Europe. This history begins in the prehistory and ends at the Cold War. From several archives we got documentation about national defence: about bastionated city walls to the ring of polygonale forts around the National Reduit Antwerp ; about earth walls and bunkers.
