Mathematician Report Index Below is a list of mathematicians. You may choose from this list or report on a mathematician not listed here. In either case, you must discuss with me the mathematician you have chosen prior to starting your report. No two students may write a report on the same mathematician. I would advise you to go to the library before choosing your topic as there might not be much information on the mathematician you have chosen. Also, you should determine the topic early in the term so that you can "lock-in" your report topic!! The report must include: 1. The name of the mathematician. 2. The years the mathematician was alive. 3. A biography. 4. The mathematician's major contribution(s) to mathematics and an explanation of the importance. 5. A historical perspective during the time the mathematician was alive.
Some suggestions on the historical perspective might be:
(a) Any wars etc.
(b) Scientific breakthroughs of the time
(c) Major discoveries of the time
(d) How did this mathematician change history etc.

Organizers: A. Hordijk and L.C.M. Kallenberg
1. GENERAL INFORMATION
The ninth summer workshop of the LNMB (Dutch for National Network on the Mathematics of Operations Research) was held in the Lorentz Center of the Leiden University, June 17-20, 1997, and was sponsored by the Lorentz Center and the Thomas Stieltjes Institute for Mathematics.
The workshop consisted of a number of lectures on the following themes:
  • Multimodularity and sequential optimization (six lectures)
  • Markovian control problems and queueing (ten lectures)
  • Combinatorial games (six lectures)

On Friday, June 20, the afternoon session was devoted to the special event of the 10th anniversary of the LNMB. This special program includes:
  • Lecture by Jan Karel Lenstra
  • Presentation of the Gijs de Leve Prize
  • Presentation of the Jubilee Book
  • Reception

The workshop was attended by 45 persons, mostly Dutch researchers in the Mathematics of Operations Research, particularly graduate students.

Nonlinear partial and ordinary differential equations appear in mathematical models for many problems in science and engineering. Many interesting phenomena are due to the nonlinearity of the equations. The desire to describe and predict such phenomena by mathematical analysis of the equations and their solutions continues to have a profound impact on the research objectives in both pure and applied mathematics. This has strongly influenced the development of the modern theory of nonlinear partial differential equations, as well as that of finite and infinite dimensional dynamical systems, nonlinear functional analysis and numerical analysis. This conference brings together a group of experts from different fields in mathematics, stimulating interaction and new collaborations in an exciting field.

AUGUST 18-22 2003,
COPENHAGEN, DENMARK
Background and scope
The Seventh International Symposium on Orthogonal Polynomials, Special Functions and Applications follows the European Conferences of Bar-Le-Duc (France, 1984), Segovia (Spain, 1986), Erice (Italy, 1990), Granada (Spain, 1991, VII SPOA), Evian (France, 1992), Delft (Holland, 1994, in honour of Thomas Jan Stieltjes Jr. (1856-1894)), Sevilla (Spain, 1997, VIII SPOA), Patras (Greece, 1999, in honour of Theodore Chihara) and Ostia (Italy, 2001). It covers the field of orthogonal polynomials and special functions and their applications in the other areas of mathematics, physics and other sciences. The Symposium is a forum for presentation and discussion of all aspects of orthogonal polynomials and special functions, ranging from the fundamental to the applied. The aim of the Symposium is to provide a common meeting ground for specialists in orthogonal polynomials, special functions and related topics, such as moment problems, rational approximation, matrix orthogonal polynomials, Sobolev orthogonal polynomials as well as in the rich variety of scientific applications of these objects. The scientific program includes plenary lectures, 30-minutes invited lectures and a session with open problems. In addition each participant is invited to submit an abstract of a talk in parallel session.

Collected Works in Mathematics and Statistics
This is a list of Mathematics and Statistics collected works that can be found at Dalhousie University and at other Halifax universities. The vast majority of these works are located in the Killam Library on the Dalhousie campus. A guide to other locations is given at the end of this list. If a title is owned by both Dalhousie and another university, only the Dalhousie site is listed. For all locations, and for full bibliographic details, see the NOVANET library catalogue This list was compiled, and the collection is being enlarged, with the invaluable help of the Bibliography of Collected Works maintained by the Cornell University Mathematics Library. The thumbnail sketches of mathematicians were taken from the MacTutor History of Mathematics Archive at the University of St. Andrews.
